Today we’d like to introduce you to Shontell Davis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up, I always looked forward to family get togethers. It was a time to reflect on good times while making new memories but to also live in the moment with those that you loved. Being in such a large family (my grandmother on my mom’s side had 15 kids), it was always a challenge to get everyone in the same place at the same time, so we had to be creative in being able to do so. The one thing that always brought people together was food!
I would reach out to family and ask, “Hey, are you coming to…?”. Most of the time, their question would be, who’s cooking or bringing what? That was their motivation for being in attendance. This was the unconscious stages in my journey of party planning!
I would organize every little detail, including those people typically didn’t think about like, is it something for everyone to do to have fun despite their age? Is there something to eat that will satisfy everyone’s unique tastebuds? My thought process was and still is, there has to be at least one thing everyone likes at any party to make it a success, no matter how big or small. I was that person who would have something in the car to eat if the food was not up to par. This was to ensure I didn’t leave because so much goes into planning any event and I didn’t want anyone’s efforts to be wasted with early departures.
Over the years, I’ve continued to be the first contacted when a party or an event needed to be planned by family or friends. I’ve specialized in making baked goods as there’s ALWAYS a request for me to bring something or do something. I’m rarely in attendance like a regular guest (laughing). It took a while for me to understand what this meant! I learned this was a compliment. This translated into (inner voice) “Girl, you are amazing at what you do, the people you touch, and the satisfaction you give others!” This began to be verbalized to me by others who also began saying I really needed to start a business as I had the talent and skills to do it.
I had a party for my kids a few years back where I had a company come into my home to provide some services. The lack of preparation and engagement by the company for this party with my kids and friends bothered me so much to where it ignited my drive to move forward in my party planning and baking business. This is how Von Treats & Party was born!
Has it been a smooth road?
It was not easy getting started with this business by any means. I am very committed in doing the best that I can in whatever I’m affiliated with. Being a wife, a mother, in corporate America, and involved in community activities as well as specific activities for my children, my time was in great demand! I struggled with time sharing as I tried to do it all equally and at the same time. This just wasn’t possible! I had to re-evaluate what was important and make it work for the business to thrive! Nothing is perfect! I still juggle today but knowing success is on the other end makes it all worth it!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
