Meet Shanine Alessia Young of Reaching While Teaching in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanine Alessia Young.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Miami, Florida. I was raised in such a loving family, however, growing up, I struggled with knowing my identity and always felt like I stood out like a sore thumb. I had low self-esteem, I was very shy and timid for a long time and I was a big time follower and not a leader.

I always felt like something was missing in my life and it wasn’t until I went away to college (FAMU) that I had a personal encounter with God. After that, my life took a complete turn and I haven’t been the same since. A boldness came over me and I started leading women bible studies on campus, making YouTube videos encouraging people and I even started a music group with my friend where we would make inspirational gospel rap songs. I was definitely breaking out of my shell.

After graduating college, I got really serious about finding out my purpose and I really felt like the education field was where I needed to be. I studied and got the necessary certifications to become an English teacher and I have been teaching in this field for the past six years. I love teaching and inspiring my students to learn and become better than they were the day before. I’ve discovered that my purpose is to empower, educate and equip others to live their best life possible. Over the years, I have grown so much in the gift of teaching. I’ve spoken at several events and I have been told that I have an unprecedented approach, therefore, I can engage and intrigue my audience, regardless of age.

God is my driving force and I truly enjoy helping people grow and become the best versions of themselves. I am the host of the Reaching While Teaching Podcast and my show is all about reaching people and touching their hearts while teaching them practical ways to live their best life. I have listeners tuning in every week all over the world to hear beneficial tips and advice that will help them walk in greatness. My family is also my driving force, I’m married to an amazing man named Jordan and we have a beautiful one year old princess. My husband is one of my biggest supporters and without him, my show wouldn’t sound as great as it does because he is my audio engineer.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No way! Walking in my purpose has definitely had its challenges. One of the most challenging yet exciting things I’ve done is write my first book! I am so excited to be an author and finally birth this baby that was cooking for a few years now. It took a whole lot of discipline and I finally finished it during this time of quarantine, which was a bit difficult because I’m juggling teaching kids online, watching my one-year-old during the day and then writing and editing my manuscript. My book Reaching While Teaching: An Educator’s Guide to Impacting & Transforming Lives was worth all the sleepless nights because I believe it will inspire and empower so many people. Thank God, I finally finished and stayed the course.

Also, I had to learn how to be my own cheerleader through this process while still trusting that God would put the right people in my path. I definitely have supportive people around me like my mom, dad, siblings and a few cousins and friends, but during this season, I’ve really been speaking more and more affirmations and believing in myself. And when self-doubt tries to seep in, God sends the right people my way to encourage me. I’ve recently made so many connections with people that support me without even thinking twice about it. I’ve met people in Africa, Guam, Canada, Ireland, France and all over the United States that believe in me and believe in my book and some who were even willing to pre-order their copy.

Launching my podcast was not an easy task either. I had to build an audience which took some months, and of course discouragement tried to seep in, when I didn’t have the listenership I was expecting and when I had some family and friends who didn’t listen or comment on any of my episodes. I had to decide to focus on those who were supporting and encouraging me. Knowing I’m walking in my purpose and cheering myself on has really helped me stay afloat and be encouraged. Now I’m pleased with the fruit of my labor.

Please tell us about Reaching While Teaching.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck, I think everything happens for a reason and my steps are ordered by God. I think putting in work is key though and nothing is just going to happen by chance, well not for me at least. Growing up, I was given the nickname “Go-getter” and that’s still how I live my life, I go after what I want and go full force.
