Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Gomez Puerto.
Sebastian Gomez Puerto was born in Bogota, Colombia in the mid-1980s. The violence in his native Colombia made his family move to the US in the early 1990s. But this wasn’t the only move Sebastian would make. For the last 30 years, he has been living in 7 different countries and 10 different cities throughout the Americas. Through these travels, Sebastian has seen first hand how people commuted using different forms of transportation and the age of 13 he promised himself that he would change the way people move. His first job led him to Ford Motor Company where he launched new compact and eco-friendly vehicles during the 2009 recession. But his dream was to create a company that would impact people’s transportation so he left to pursue his MBA in entrepreneurship at Babson College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2014. That same year, Sebastian co-founded Cafe X, a successful robotic coffee bar company headquartered in San Francisco. After some time in Silicon Valley, Sebastian decided he was ready to launch the transportation company he dreamed about and moved to Miami to make it happen. But this time, robotics and last mile electric devices became part of the picture. SunVessel was born in late 2017 with that same purpose that ignited Sebastian’s early dreams – to change the way we move.
Has it been a smooth road?
Finding the right team members and sources of capital in South Florida have been the biggest challenges for SunVessel during our journey. It took me over a year to find the amazing team we currently have which includes architects, industrial designers, electrical engineers, robotic engineers, machine learning experts, front end and back end software developers. Our long term mission includes generating technology and design jobs for students who want to stay in the Miami area and contributing to our growth.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
SunVessel is a network of smart charging stations for electric and robotic personal mobility devices installed in hotels, offices, and apartment buildings that enable people to take short trips in a city without the need of a car. We are the next generation of transportation amenity. What makes me the proudest is that we are on a mission to change the way people move by using one of our region’s biggest asset: real estate, to solve one of the biggest problems facing our city: our dependency on cars.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The most important characteristic that I look for in myself and in those who join me on this journey is tenacity. This is especially true in hard times. I like folks that don’t dwell on the past, but rather focus on the present and on solutions. Entrepreneurship is all about iteration. What I mean by that is that the only way to continue is by having the tenacity to keep moving during this process. At Sunvessel, we’ve gone through hundreds of designs and countless of frustrations… but we keep going.
