Meet Sandra Durbin of Sandra’s Cakes in Port St. Lucie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Durbin.

Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey of designing cakes started after I decided to leave my job as an Administrative Assistant and Billing Specialist at Tequesta Fire Rescue to actually be a stay at home mom to our newborn son. My background has always been in administrative support and public relations and never in my wildest dreams, did I think about becoming a Cake Designer. It all started with a fun weekend while visiting my husband’s cousin in Orlando, where I was introduced to making homemade fondant. The experience of making my first decorated cake was like love at first sight! I absolutely fell in love with designing and making cakes and pretty much have taught myself much of what I know. I have an extensive collection of cake decorating books, which is how I started learning and also have to credit all the talented and amazing cake artists around the globe for sharing their love, passion and talents online, which is a great resource for learning this form of art. I also believe that God has gifted me with an artistic eye and special abilities and I am truly grateful for that.

Like many cake artists, my career began as a hobby which sooner than later, became a full time job. I started selling my cakes through a local bakery that offered me the opportunity to use their kitchen and eventually, I opened my own cake studio. At the present time, I work under the Florida Cottage Law, which allows me more flexibility and most importantly time with my family. I work by appointment only.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur brings new challenges every single day. When you own a business, you have to wear many different hats and it is very difficult to hang your job and responsibilities at the front door until you go back to work the next day. I’m always thinking about cake designs, orders, details, answering emails and phone calls and that it’s something that goes with me pretty much everywhere. I’ve been trying to find the perfect balance for the past 10 years, but who I’m I trying to fool? There is no perfect balance. Success comes from giving only your best to everything you do and doing it with love, passion, integrity and honesty. At the beginning, establishing myself within the wedding industry community was a bit challenging, but with a strong work ethic, beautiful cake designs, attention to detail on my cakes and tasty cake combinations and flavors, I was quickly embraced by the amazing industry professionals, I’ve had the privilege to work with and call my friends.

Sandra’s Cakes – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in creating wedding cakes and one of a kind celebration cakes. My approach to cake design is to capture every idea that my clients have in mind and all the elements that they bring as inspiration and transforming them into the cake of their dreams. I absolutely enjoy the creative process and love when my clients give me creative freedom to make their cakes. I also get inspired by nature, fabrics, the hardware store and pretty much by everything that surrounds me everywhere I go.

My cakes are sought out for their unique and beautiful designs, the fine details and for their amazing taste. I only use fresh ingredients and bake only from scratch. I use a heirloom cake recipe that produces a super moist, fragrant and tasty cake that gets rave reviews time after time. We mainly serve clients from Vero Beach to Palm Beach.

For me, making cakes is very personal. I love meeting with my clients and listening to their ideas and then creating a unique edible masterpiece that is the perfect focal point to their celebration and definitely a piece of conversation. To me, it is important that cakes tell a story. I love the creative process of sketching a cake and then seeing it come to life. Being able to be part of so many special events and helping my clients create long lasting memories means the world to me. The big smiles and tears of joy when I deliver the cakes, is the fuel that keeps me going every week!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am extremely proud to have been serving my clients for over ten years. Facebook, Instagram and my blog have been great platforms to showcase my work but returning clients and their reviews of my product and service is priceless. Being able to turn a hobby into a very successful small business and to obtain the support and respect of other industry professionals has been a great accomplishment.

I take pride in providing the best possible customer service and I believe in having great work ethic.

My cakes have been featured in local and international magazines. I’ve had the honor of working in various styled shoots with other amazing wedding professionals and we have been published in Style Me Pretty and 100 Layer Cake; two highly acclaimed blogs,

I have made cakes for high profile personalities and I’m proud to have made a cake for Mr. Burt Reynolds’ 80’s birthday celebration.

Placing Gold and Best in Sugar Shoe Category at the New York Cake Show in 2017, was a great accomplishment.
