Today we’d like to introduce you to Hada Grullon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Hada. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Hada Grullon, a first-generation American from the Dominican Republic who has never forgotten about the people who helped me to where I am today: the head of one of the most successful delivery and medical courier services in Florida. Our company has won multiple awards, including the Outstanding Businesswoman of 1999 by the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Customer/Client Service Excellence Award by Morgan Stanley/ Dean Witter. We’ve also been featured in many TV, Radio programs, and newspaper articles.
I had all the dreams in the world when I came to the United States- to get a good education, a good job, and to work hard. I truly believed that all of my wishes would become reality. I thanked God every day for having a job for 16 years, at one of the best banks in Florida. It was quite an achievement. I was very proud of my job and believed that working hard and always showing pride, is a job well done.
WAKE UP CALL…
The bank had some financial difficulties after 150 years, which had all of the employees, including myself, on edge. It wasn’t until that dreadful day, where I came back from lunch that I had noticed there was a policeman in my office. He immediately asked me to pack my belongings and escorted me to my car. It appeared that I was one of the unfortunate people being laid off. Though, that doesn’t explain why me being let go was handled in such a manner. Either way, I didn’t let that stop me from moving forward.
Soon after, I landed another job which didn’t last very long. It was a little less than a year that I worked there. Instead of feeling sad and disappointed, I was relieved because I did not feel satisfied nor fulfilled with my job. I always felt like something was missing. That missing piece fell into place when I started my own business, beating all odds.
I created my business by making a difference in the way business owners treat their clients. Customers were never just a number to me. I, on the contrary, advocate by building relationships that go beyond dollars and cents. Not only by checking in every now and then, but also making our customers feel like part of our family- such as, remembering their birthdays, anniversaries, showing gratitude, and building trust. I am also consistently thinking of cost-effective ways to improve our service and delivery solutions. Always thank them for the opportunity to serve them every day.
Our company has overcome both critics and the recession using this method. “I always believed and put into practice that my customers become my friends first, then they become my client” My business flourished from the garage of my home. My husband was doing the deliveries while I was doing the marketing. I had to take second and third jobs just to pay the mortgage on time every month. It was extremely hard at the time, but quitting was not an option:
To this day, I still hold on to what has helped me through these past 23 years; which is to let go of my internal fears and take control of any situations and obstacles in my way. I kept researching and kept expanding my knowledge to grow my business and income. I’ve lived by the motto, ‘Failure is not an option” for as long as I can remember. I have always been very optimistic, truly believing that we just need to work harder, keep learning new things, work together to satisfy our customers’ expectations, and transform a challenge into an opportunity!
Three years ago, I brought on board my sister Cristina to be my CFO. One of the most important roles of her job is to hire and train our team members with the same passion and dedication that we’ve repeatedly demonstrated throughout the years. Compassion and understanding have been the backbone of our success. “Never quit,” “If you believe, and you really need to believe, then you will be willing to sacrifice things at times to achieve the goal. If you are fortunate enough to serve with the right team, they will have the same mentality. You will run into obstacles all along the way, but how you deal with them and how you overcome them will determine your success. A team that’s cohesive will work miracles.
