Meet Rekha Kanhai of Le Chien Gourmet in Edgewater

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rekha Kanhai.

Rekha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Le Chien gourmet is a holistic dog food line that is made with repurposed local ingredients from the community. Such as imperfect produce, juice pulp, spent grains and fish skins. I own a dog named Knuffel, he is a rescue that I got from the humane society five years ago he is a terrier/mix which is a breed that is very prone to skin allergies and ear infections.

I gradually decided to remove him from the store-bought dog food and meal prepping for him, after a few months I saw a drastic change in his coat. He still gets ear infections every so often; however, now I apply a few drops of our homemade coconut oil to clear this up.

Also, I really wanted to create a holistic dog food line that also is environment-friendly and eliminates waste. That’s why our treats are sold in glass jars, which we recycle. Upon returning an empty jar, you get 10% off.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, I think any entrepreneur will tell you that it is never a smooth road to success. My main struggles were mainly perfecting recipes and finding the best flavors according to the dog’s palate.

Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
I would like to see the dog food industry change more than it is now and move more to the holistic route. Dogs need to eat healthy and clean as we do and unfortunately, dry kibble doesn’t provide all the healthy nutrients and fresh ingredients that they need for their diet.
