Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Fenelus.
Randy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story starts at age 20. I recently left my mother’s home and moved in with my best friend and his girlfriend at the time. I would just cook just for us at home. I would watch different cooking shows and try and duplicate what I seen the chefs make. We had a younger neighbor who would come over to the house and hang out. Eventually, he would be around more frequently so he always came over and ate.soon after that, I would have him in the kitchen learning how to make different things. He would tell the other neighbors about the food, then they would offer to pay for food. I cooked for fun, so I never saw the benefit in it, I was fully invested to my job at the time so I would decline the money and just invite people over.
Around that time, I saw a Facebook video about these guys in California called Trap kitchen and I always thought that it was a cool story. Fast forward a couple of years later, age 24. Me still stuck in my repetitive routine, still determined to move up at work and not realize what was right in front of me. I went for a position at work and didn’t get it. I was devastated and I just knew it had to be a reason. I am a firm believer in things happen for a reason, whether we believe it’s right or wrong. It wasn’t that I wasn’t good enough for the position it’s just God had better plans for me.
My best friend brought the idea up of selling food. Sold me the dream, but quitting my job and doing that full time was a gamble. So I dropped down from full time to part-time at work. Me, my little brother and a couple friends of mine sat down for a couple days With a list of names and voted on names. We got Smackerz second day. We made a blueprint of how we intended on moving as far as business-wise and made sure we weren’t going to put out anything unless we owned our name. I got my commission check that month gave it to my cousin, she paid for our name got us legit and we started moving.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth role at all. I have been through ups and downs but that’s what makes the story for me I’ve done try to sell food when no one wants or went to events that we expected a bunch of people and didn’t sell as much as intended I remember catching anxiety attacks because I was taking on too much working and then coming home to cook to go do deliveries come back home clean up and do it all over again at 7 am the next day for five out of seven days or not having a day off because my day off will be a day I have to cook and you can’t close shop no matter what cause consistency is what’s going to make the difference, in my opinion, I remember being sick cooking with gloves a face mask goggles and having my brother do the deliveries.
