Meet Brenden Fitzgerald of Planet Protein in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenden Fitzgerald.

Brenden, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
At 27, I am the founder of Planet Protein, Inc. and prior USMC infantry squad leader. Ineligible my senior year of HS soccer due to poor academics, I immediately started to feel depressed. Upon graduation, I joined the United States Marine Corps as my “way-out” or a “new life”. I took certain qualities instilled and applied them in and out of different industries, sales gigs and small entrepreneurial projects. With no real purpose in life, a split family and facing uncertainty, I luckily stumbled upon two documentaries that changed my life immediately: Cowspiracy and Vegucated… woke up vegan the next day. Five days later, Planet Protein was born and my drive was at an all-time high! Self-motivated/self-taught, I began my new journey and assembled the ProTEAM and prepared to officially launch our vegan protein company on August 15, 2017. We are now developing new products and working with charities to help battle deforestation by planting more trees. Working each day to improve myself, this planet and make for positive impact with my surroundings!

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. I’ve faced many forms of adversity along the way. In terms of the business: manufacturing didn’t go as planned (little fish in big sea), graphic design flaws, raising capital took longer than expected, delegating an entire team and leading by example is also much more difficult than one would think!

I met Wilson Chandler, Forward for the Denver Nuggets on Twitter and he actually helped us launch the company. It took months of meetings and trust building but Wilson invested and is now an equity partner!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Planet Protein is here to constantly innovate and create more convenient plant-based options to the consumer, so we can keep the people healthy and our planet alive. Emissions are destroying our planet and the animal agriculture industry is one of the most harmful practices. If we provide healthy and conscious alternatives, we will in turn contribute to less emission and help save the planet.

We offer two products currently: Peanut Butter Cup and Cherry Almond Fudge protein bars packed with 20g pea based protein, high in fiber, added superfoods and no palm-oil. Palm-oil is actually one of the most destructive ingredients on the planet. Our protein powder is the works (manufactured in Miami Lakes) launching early this year!

The World Wildlife Fund classifies 19 animals as critically endangered. Eight of these animals, live in the direct path of rampaging deforestation to clear space for palm oil plantations.

To harvest palm-oil, the rainforest is burned to heights visible from space. Much of the world’s most important ecosystems currently face extinction. While palm oil makes the product cheaper to produce and can greatly enhance the flavor, we would never sacrifice our planet to increase our profits.

Our biggest focus is moving towards zero waste. We want to be as sustainable as possible, so compostable containers and more eco-friendly packaging on the way!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
YES! Miami was ranked top 10 vegan cities according to VegNews. The community is strong here and I couldn’t ask for a better support system. Much love to this amazing city!

If you’re starting up a business, Miami is definitely an area to focus on. Being such a diverse setting, so many people are more open-minded and will offer feedback and assistance. Networking is the way to build a brand but respect and kindness are the keys to maintaining it.
