Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Carratala.
Patty, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I was always very passionate about art. I remember always loving drawing and painting. I was always that hands on type of kid. As far as photos is concerned, we grew up never having our pictures taken as kids in our family, I even had mentioned to my mom how I always wanted to see her wedding pictures or everyday photos of her life and unfortunately there was nothing she was capable of sharing with me. Everything was blur about her life growing up and even her family and ancestors. This also was the case with my childhood, I really didn’t have anything to look back at and remember about my childhood days. It wasn’t until I reached middle school, that I became obsessed with developing images in the dark room. My mom then gave me my first ever film camera and I became so thrilled about creating moments and developing the art at school. As the years went by, I bought my first point and shoot camera and became more and more curious about photography. After high school, I decided to go to Miami-Dade for photography and really grasp the technical side of it all and practice more and more and create more moments.
My passion grew so much when I got pregnant with my miracle little girl, Emily Grace, that I continued to capture her life in the ordinary. I was fascinated by real raw moments that were imperfectly perfect and everyday light and I knew I wanted to make sure she had a memory of her childhood unlike a blur of what I had growing up. In 2013, I decided to leave my banking position because I knew in my heart that what I loved most was being a memory maker for families and be present in my daughters life. Thankfully by the grace of God and my husband Nelson, I was able to leave my full time job and become a small business owner and opened up my LLC. So far, just like any other small business it has not been easy with one income since my husband is the main provider but God has graciously giving me so much and has provided every step of the way and He has allowed me to be present for others to create sweet memories. I am forever humbled by what a step of faith did to allow me to grow my dream in such a way that I can call this my job.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing has been easy so far. I always say out of ashes something beautiful is created and you must work hard at everything you want to accomplish. I would say that for me the hardest thing has been finding balance. I believe that family is first and so being a small business owner you must prioritize everyday what is the most important thing to be able to love and serve your clients well. Like any other business owner the struggles will come your way, tears will come too, but when you work with your heart you know this isn’t about you anymore and the reward is even bigger for you and those around you.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Patty Carratala Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in weddings and families. I love being a families memory maker. I love being the one to capture a wedding day to the season of expecting a little one , to milestones , to everyday moments of a families life. I believe I am patient with my families in general and they can see that I do love what I do. I think connection also goes a long way and again, I am not the best photographer, there are many wonderful creative minds out there. I would say that genuinely doing this out of love has set me apart.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The characteristic that I feel is most important to me in my business is loving and serving. Without love, there is nothing.
