Today we’d like to introduce you to Paola Ramos.
Paola, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was raised within a family of medical doctors. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a doctor like them. My perspective did not change until… I realized psychology was my true passion, three years into Medical school. I took a course in psychology that completely changed my view on what I wanted to do with my life.
In May 2014, I decided to switch careers and I moved to Miami, Florida. In 2016, I graduated with a BA degree in psychology from Florida International University. In August of 2019, I received an MS degree in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University.
When I was younger, I was always caring for those around me. I could see a persons’ inner feelings and feel their emotions on a personal level. I would receive so much love and encouragement from helping others and I quickly learned how powerful and valuable my perceptive skills were. Everyone around me always told me that I would be a great therapist one day.
However, I never showed my kindness to others as a means of building my career. I just knew in my heart that it was right to offer a helping hand when needed.
The reason I am where I am today is that I was given a hand by so many valuable people in my life when I most needed it. I am so thankful for all of those helping hands!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! It was not easy for me to leave my family and all that I had built so far. The idea of starting all over again terrified me. While I was physically leaving them behind, I learned to accept the changes while being supported at a distance. Balancing work and school at first was tough, but worth it. This question allowed me to think about all I have accomplished thus far. I am proud of myself for accepting those changes and pursuing my passion.
Please tell us about Perceptive Counseling – what should we know?
My passion for helping others began at a young age and has developed into my life’s mission. In September of 2019, I opened up my own private practice in Miami, Florida called Perceptive Counseling, LLC. As a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, I provide therapy in both English and Spanish.
Why Perceptive? Because a person who is perceptive is someone who is skilled at understanding and gathering information through the senses. A perceptive person is someone who is insightful, intelligent and able to see what others cannot. A perceptive person is someone who is sensitive – and sensitive is me.
I specialize in helping children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with life-changes, unwanted behaviors, or emotional stressors to gain clarity on their issues and empower them to positively transform their lives.
My perceptive and encouraging personality is what got me to where I am today. A place where Perceptive Counseling, LLC will allow me to help others who are struggling to identify their goals in a safe, welcoming environment.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success is defined by overcoming challenges. I have faced challenges myself that have taught me how to understand, accept, and love the person I am today. It has brought me great success in my field. Giving back and sharing with others my story is one of the most rewarding experiences.
My advice to you pursue your dreams and trust your instincts. It’s all about choosing your path and becoming who you want to be.
