Meet Nuria Richards of Piero Atchugarry Gallery in Little Haiti

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nuria Richards.

Nuria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m an Art Market Specialist currently running a contemporary art gallery in Miami. My career started when I decided to go to Art School against my father’s wishes for me to go to Med, eventually, I completed a Masters in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute of Art.

I was living in California when I got an invitation to talk about a project opening in Little Haiti and traveled for to meet the owner of Piero Atchugarry Gallery, I accepted the offer to run Piero Atchugarry Gallery two days after landing in Miami and we presented our inaugural exhibition on the day of my birthday. That was very special.

What I do is supporting people to build art collections. Art collections are full of content, they tell us about society, humanity, and possibility.

There’s so much that I want to do, and what I’ve accomplished so far I did by developing an understanding of how things could be. I’ve had the opportunity to work with outstanding people, colleagues, friends, partners in crime that love their practice. I keep those people close because they are the ones that talk and share, and eventually find ways to keep building.

Has it been a smooth road?
Oh boy! The road has been rough but wonderful. I do what I love, I literally coexist with art, artists, collectors every single day. I faced everything from depression when I was very young to racism when I moved to the US. Depression changed my life, it almost took it, and understanding the world from that position can get very challenging. I refer to art as a way to dialogue with things around me.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I build art collections. Art collections are an archive and have an impact on how we can refer to the world through time, sometimes through narratives that feel current and close, sometimes through a way to look at the past.

As Art Market Specialist, I understand the financial factor of acquiring art and the possibilities of it. I’m currently very interested in the relationship that women have with their financial decision and how that translates into decisions related to buying art.

The gallery has given me a platform and a reference point in a city that has an outstanding art life. I think that my strength as a professional comes from all my other strengths, as a human being, and as a woman.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I love that in Miami days are long, there’s almost no way to go through the 24 hours of a day without something going on, people are connected and collaborating. It almost makes wish the day had more hours, so you can keep on doing things.

I don’t like that there’s not a more structured subway system.
