Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Brown.
Nicole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating from the University of Miami with a double major in English and Communication, I moved to the west coast to pursue a career in television. While working for the William Morris Agency, Spelling Television and Bruckheimer Television I craved an outlet for stress management and began volunteering for The Amanda Foundation, a non-profit organization who at that time rescued and rehabilitated dogs from East LA shelters. I immediately became hooked while working with the dogs and knew I wanted to do something with my new passion.
In 2004, I packed my bags and drove across the country back to Miami, Florida, with the intention of learning all that I could about animal welfare in my hometown. Immediately, I began working for the Humane Society of Greater Miami, where I was involved in all aspects of the organization’s operations including development, fundraising, event planning, animal care, and, helped open the Soffer-Fine Adoption Center in North Miami, Florida. After three years, I decided it was time to go out on my own and Miami Pet Concierge was the result.
During my time at HSGM, I learned there was a need for at home pet care in Miami and I set out to provide that service for pet parents. It became my mission to teach people how to become great pet parents.
Since MPC’s opening in May of 2007, I have continued to grow and learn as much as I can about animal welfare. I’ve volunteered for a number of animal welfare organizations and sat on the board for Spay/Neuter Foundation at Miami-Dade Animal Services. I’ve also continued my education by earning my Small Animal Massage Practitioner (SAMP) Certificate in Maintenance, Performance, and Rehabilitation Massage from Northwest School of Animal Massage – I specialize in Myofascial Release Therapy (MFRT), Trigger Point Therapy (TPT) and Stress Point Therapy (SPT). I have also trained under Cindy Horsfall of La Paw Spa, where I received my certification in Canine Aquatic Therapy after graduating Levels One and Two of Heart of Canine Aquatics Training Programs. In May of 2018, I expect to complete my Certification in Applied Animal Behavior from the University of Washington.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
After ten years in business, you come to learn by trial and error and when I say error I don’t mean legitimate mistakes, I mean adjusting procedures that didn’t necessarily run as smoothly as you intended and with adjustments, they become a well-oiled machine. Running a small business is no easy task. For those who have asked me for advice in the past, I have told them… You must really love what you do because your business becomes what you eat, sleep, drink, and breath. If you aren’t willing to sacrifice many important things in your life, then starting or running a small business isn’t a good choice. Of course you run into struggles – dealing with tough clients, staffing issues, or a constant changing schedule; but all in all, it’s like a drug and being a small business owner keeps you on your toes. A day in the life of small business owner is ever changing. You have to be able to hand that constant change.
