Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Cortez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Natasha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey with makeup started when I was a young girl, watching my grandmothers get ready for parties. I loved to see the process, from choosing an outfit and accessories, to styling the hair and makeup. It was such a glamorous relaxing time and I felt special being able to sit on the floor and observe them.
As I grew up I always enjoyed doing my makeup and friend’s makeup but I had never thought about it as a career. One day I decided I wanted to work for myself and that I was going to be a makeup artist. I found a school in LA, TNT Agency, and I quit my hospitality job and just went for it.
That course changed my life. It was the first time I met people who were doing makeup and making a good living. I thought this is what I want to do!
I came home and declared myself a makeup artist, ha! I started working with photographers and models doing as many test shoots as I could. I freelanced at the mall for Bobbi Brown and NARS. I learned so much from that experience, even though I disliked working in the mall and knew selling makeup was not what I wanted.
It was tough at first and I struggled. But I kept on doing makeup and hair and I had so many people give me opportunities, my confidence and clientele grew, and looking back everything always led to something better.
Today my heart is with bridal. I love being part of such a momentous occasion and that I can offer so much more than makeup and hair to my Brides.
My goal was always to be able to support myself doing makeup and hair. I have achieved that and so much more. I have a team of amazing artists and hair stylists that I love to work and be with. I have lovely clients and wonderfully supportive vendors. I feel truly blessed that every day I get to live my dream.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a road full of all the ups and downs anyone starting their own business faces.
The more time as an artist that you can invest in yourself and in education, the better you will become. But skills take time to develop and paying jobs don’t appear out of nowhere.
So it was a struggle at the start when for example, I needed to master hair and wanted to take classes but I was still struggling to pay bills. I knew it was important to improve my skills to offer the best possible services to my clients.
Making those leaps of faith to invest in yourself can be tough. Especially when you’re staring at the phone hoping someone is going to book. It is definitely worth it though!
Please tell us about Tashy Marie Makeup.
At Tashy Marie Makeup we are happily available for any and all occasions that need makeup and hair!
One of our main focuses is Bridal Beauty! Beyond providing fabulous makeup and hair we want to create a fun, relaxing, and luxurious experience for our Brides.
Nothing makes me prouder than a happy text or lovely email from a Bride, especially about the team. Often it’s about how much they loved the makeup and hair, but so many times it’s about how we made them feel and how happy they were to have us there.
Being part of a wedding is an honor and the team and I are so grateful for all our fabulous Brides and their trust on such an important once in a life time event.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
All my favorite memories involve spending time with my family. The holidays were the best times. The whole family would get together and cook, bake, drink, eat, dance, and laugh, there was always so much love and laughter.
