Meet Michelle Perez of Keratin Girl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Perez.

Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career at the Toni & Guy Academy in Erie, Pennsylvania. Right before I graduated I found interest in the educational part of things as well as coloring and cutting hair. I went to a train the trainer event to learn how to teach hair dressers to apply Global Keratin treatments at the time, now known as GK hair. After my first class I never looked back! I was hooked on learning more about Keratin treatments and the benefits they served for my color and cutting clients.

After about a year up north I returned to south Florida where I was living before having my son Gabriel. I moved down here as a single mom with a 1 year old and began working for a company called Diora professional now known as Keratherapy. I was traveling locally & nationally at first then later internationally demonstrating how to apply these treatments and sell their after care products. I was also helping them in the office test out new products on models, take photos, answer questions for stylist who had been certified to use the treatments, pick out scents, create hair demos and all the fun things involving creating a global brand.

It was a lot of fun traveling when I was not working for celebrity stylist Ted Gibson and his husband Jason Backe. I then met my now partner and this was 6 years ago. Shortly after we had got engaged my partner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and my son was diagnosed with a learning disability. Ted & Jason inspired me to make moves in the industry and they showed me that in order to take care of my family financially I needed to be on my own time and be my own boss.

So I created Keratin Girl. Keratin Girl is a few things.
1- It is me. I am the Keratin Girl. I love keratin in my hair, and I am contacted by over 800 women a year coming in and out of Miami to receive this treatment by a professional who will take into consideration what she is starting with and where my guest would like to go with her hair.
2- Keratin Girl is also my 26′ tape in hair extension line created for and sold to salon beauty professionals.
3- Keratin Girl just finished creating a unisex skin care line called KG.

My son is striving greatly with all the therapy I have been able to provide for him out of pocket, my partner is still battling the big C but she is here, and feeling great! I was also able to help her finish writing her book The President’s Daughter, a memoir and Keratin Girl is busier than ever!

I am truly thankful for my profession for being in existence. With my hair dressing license I have been able to travel the world, work with the sick, work with celebrities, take care of my family financially and touch lives! Every time we put our hands on our clients we change their life. It could be their hair, their day, or their year. I have been gifted a talent that I will not waste and for me this is all I could ask for in success. Do what you love to do and make change happen.

Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the obstacles I have faced throughout my journey are trial and error; trying manufacturers and not getting the results I wanted; sleepless nights; working with places such as Italy; India and China; being a caregiver to my partner battling the big C; and maintaining and/or meeting the demands of the beauty market.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Keratin Girl story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in smoothing and taming systems for the hair. I travel to my guests! I travel all over the US however I live in south Florida and most of my clients are here in Miami! I am known for these smoothing systems aka keratin treatments.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
This is the best city if you want to be a Keratin Girl and I can train any licensed professional to be one! The women in south Florida need the protein to battle with the humidity! We have an abundance of international travelers too whom when they get here, they don’t know how to style their hair without one!
