Meet Michelle Olson-Rogers of Modern Boca Mom

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Olson-Rogers.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My name is Michelle Olson-Rogers and I’m a Boca Raton native and happily married mother of one. The daughter of a serial entrepreneur, I’ve always wanted to run my own business. I initially thought that would happen to me taking over a boutique public relations agency in NYC. But, the best-laid plans don’t always work out like you think they will… And sometimes that it’s a blessing in disguise.

I had the seed of an idea growing in my head after we moved from NYC back to Boca Raton in 2013 and I was struggling to find educational activities to do with my 5-month-old daughter. Luckily, I found a music class for babies through our local children’s museum, but their website was terrible.

Where was that “go to”, organized, an easy-to-read website for moms like me to find out what “cool and city-oriented” things were happening for families in Boca Raton and beyond? There was no such thing, so I decided to create it myself: ModernBocaMom.com.

The site has been growing and evolving for almost 4 years now and I’m really proud that I went for it as a MOMpreneur!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always challenges in business. I think online advertising, video and social media promotion are still relatively new concepts to many businesses in South Florida, which makes selling paid promotion on a local blog sometimes tricky.

Modern Boca Mom is also very time consuming; feeding the blog with new content 4-5 days per week, utilizing SEO, learning Quickbooks, developing event concepts, shooting videos, attending events, networking with other bloggers and business owners and raising a preschooler. I’m sure many moms can relate (at least to that last part)!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Modern Boca Mom – what should we know?
Modern Boca Mom is the only localized lifestyle website for the stylish & modern South Florida parent that focuses solely on commerce, business, MOMpreneurs (mommy entrepreneurs), events and amenities available to Boca Raton (and surrounding area) families.

Since launch, the site has had many fabulous promotional opportunities to work with not only local businesses, but big brands as well.

We’ve also really upped our game when it comes to video this year, creating quality content for Modern Boca Mom readers. We want to be the go-to resource for our 30,000 monthly followers in South Florida!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Because I treated the blog like a business from the onset, I brought on paid contributors to lighten the load and these ladies, like my sister Lauren Ricks, have been amazing in helping to create so many different and smart voices on the site. I also lean on other, more experienced bloggers to teach me tips and tricks and share business leads. I’m always willing to collaborate and think it’s key in this industry. I’m an active member of FemCity Boca Raton as a result.

My biggest partner, Grandview Preparatory School in Boca Raton, has also allowed me to grow in a major way by not only becoming a major promotional client but becoming the official venue for my “Modern Boca Mommy & Me” classes for Babies and Toddlers. It’s a win/win–I’m able to interact with many of my readers (and their cute kiddos!) each week and they get to become more familiar with Grandview’s early childhood teachers and beautiful campus.

I also have to thank my loyal readers. ModernBocaMom.com would be nothing without people clicking and reading each day!
