Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Gonzalez.
Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started writing from the age of ten and always did it for myself and not the general public. In 2012, I evolved Music in Mellsville into www.mellystarz.com and focused on interviewing underground hip hop artists. As it grew, so did the types of people featured. I soon began to interview painters, DJs, and producers. As the years have gone by, it has continued to adapt and evolve into album reviews, event reviews, and even gaming live streams. The road to staying relevant hasn’t been easy but through perseverance, the site is still standing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all but in life the best things never are. My education and background were not an issue at all considering I have a Bachelor’s in Communication Arts and a Masters in Entertainment Business. The struggles have come on a personal level due to various medical issues and being involved in abusive relationships. The site had to take a back seat, I never let that completely hinder me however and would always try to post even when I could barely get out of bed. I would often find myself sneaking about to try and get a post up when it could have cost me everything.
Please tell us about Melly Starz.
Melly Starz is all about helping up and coming artists expand their audience even when they are just starting out. Your following has no impact on whether you get featured, it is solely based on your talent. Having a documented interview or feature is something that an artist can use as leverage to gain a following and even land a record deal. Melly Starz is most well-known for artists’ interviews, and the precision of the writing staff to effectively communicate to the audience an artists’ truth and talent. What we are most proud of is having stayed relevant for so many years while most other Miami hip hop bloggers fell off. The main thing that sets us apart from others is that we build relationships with every artist for years forth. We do not feature them once and never show support again, we continue our support through social media even if their project isn’t featured on the site.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is going to this big rock we had in our backyard, hidden all the way in the back with my headphones and a notebook. I would sit there for hours just writing and listening to music. This is where my love of music and writing formed.
