Meet May Martin of Pilates by May in Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to May Martin.

May, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey as a Pilates Instructor began in 2017 when I began studying Pilates as a way to overcome the pain of my scoliosis. All the hard work and effort paid off, and I now live pain-free and strong. Since that time, I have seen a tremendous improvement in my life and in the overall look of my body. I was so pleased with the outcome that I wanted to share the benefits I had gained through Pilates with everyone. Every year I continue my education studying different pathologies and how to teach the method to everybody; whether you are an athlete, older or young I am here to help people improve their body awareness, strengthen their core muscles, and create lean, long muscles.

My journey has been truly rewarding. Listening to my clients say that they feel revitalized and pain-free while exercising, and seeing them do things with their bodies that they never thought possible is truly the most rewarding part of my job.

Whether they speak Spanish or English, I am here to help clients achieve their “best selves.”

Has it been a smooth road?
I was lucky, I began teaching in a small Pilates studio in Tennessee. The owner had thirty years of experience, and she was willing to pass her knowledge on to me. She let me teach a small group class in her studio. I quickly realized that people with certain injuries would benefit greatly from the method she taught. However, it was tough getting started. I visited multiple physical therapy locations asking if I could leave my contact information in their waiting rooms. Most of them said no, but one agreed and sent me my first customer. The individual had several surgeries on their knee, hip, ankle and back. Within six months of coming, three times a week, to my class, he looked like a new person. His back was straight. His legs were the same proportions, and he can walk now. Best walking advertisement I could have asked for. He brought me many other customers.

I also took specialty classes for the pre and post-operative customers, so my group classes quickly became private classes.

Since moving to Florida, and with Covid 19, new challenges have arisen. I am facing them by teaching online and at Athleta store events in local parks. I am also renting studio space in the Carrollwood and South Tampa area.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Pilates by May – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Nationally Certified Pilates instructor and a member of PMI (Pilates Mat Instructor). PMI maintains high standards for teaching and requires continuing education as a part of their program. I feel it’s very important for people to know that you are nationally certified and the Pilates method you use when choosing an instructor. The term “Pilates” is used rather loosely to include a lot of different things. It has nothing to do with the specific method.

Everybody is different and presents different challenges to overcome; for example, a person with Scoliosis should train differently than someone with a straight spinal column. The same goes for someone with a herniated disc. It’s important to train properly to prevent their condition from getting worse.

If you are a professional athlete, say a golfer or a tennis player, who wants to improve your swing or work on your balance, I am here to help. I can help you improve your posture, strengthen your core, and help with your balance. Best of all, we’ll have fun in the process.

Life is about re-inventing ourselves and adapting to what life throws us at any given time.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the energy of the people. It makes me feel like there is always something going on; there is so much variety when choosing a restaurant and every entrepreneur in town are giving their best; but, I dislike the traffic.
