Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Waring.
Matthew, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, when we hit tough times — which was naturally every two weeks before my mom got paid — she would tell me “I don’t know how we do it, but we always end up on our feet.”
While my mother’s hope was briefly calming, it was not a very good strategy. I knew that to break the cycle of struggle, I would have to learn how to control the events in my life rather than being controlled by them.
Both of my parents were honest, hard-working, loyal employees who stayed broke because they didn’t have college degrees. So, I became the first person in my family for generations that graduated from college.
I studied for the law school admissions test for 6 months and took over 50 times practice tests to incrementally increase my score to the precise and consistent number that would get me into a decent law school. It worked, because I was accepted to the University of Florida – the top law school in the state – and was admitted to a few others.
After law school, I was practically homeless. My lease was up and I had no money and everything I owned was in my car. My uncle in central Florida was kind enough to let me stay in his house in Floral City, Florida (population 600) while I studied for the Florida Bar exam. Uncle Harvey insisted that I mow the fields, reorganize woodpiles, or till the soil on his farm because “that’s what a young man ought to be doing.”
I passed the bar exam and got a job in West Palm Beach working for the largest trial law firm in Florida defending insurance companies against injury claims. There I handled dozens of hotly contested litigated cases and went to court over a hundred times. I also learned the defense industry tactics to avoid paying claims to injury victims.
Three and a half years into my career, I watched my Uncle die of mesothelioma, a deadly form of lung cancer. A steadfast working man his whole life, it was the repeated exposure to asbestos on the job that sealed his fate.
At that moment, I switched sides and began fighting for injury victims.
Since I’ve been advocating for the injured, I have won millions of dollars in compensation for my clients and have been privileged to see many amazing comeback stories. I started my own practice —Waring Law — which is dedicated to giving injury victims the advice and advocacy they need during the toughest times in their lives.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s taken a little longer than I expected to cut through all of the noise in the personal injury advertising space in South Florida. I overcome that by being as authentic as possible and focusing on clients rather than competition.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Waring Law story. Tell us more about the business.
Waring Law is more than a law firm. To me, it’s the marriage between blue-collar, honest, hardworking authenticity and bold, aggressive, action.
Waring Law specializes in fighting the delay caused by insurance companies that stands between injury victims and the full and fair compensation they deserve.
Waring Law is “at war with delay”. Get it?
I’m most proud of the fact that we look outside of the legal market to hire smart people. For example, we have recently hired a former Human Resources professional with a background in the aerospace industry and former chief compliance officer for a large brokerage firm.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I immediately stop listening to anyone who says that good luck at some point in their life was not a contributing factor to their success.
That said, I’ve focused on minimizing the negative effects of bad luck and maximizing the opportunity of good luck. You’ve got to be able to bounce back quickly from setbacks and then explode through the smallest of openings that life gives you.
