Meet Masha Ermeeva

Today we’d like to introduce you to Masha Ermeeva.

Masha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

My journey was not a straight line; it took lots of trials, turns, and curves to arrive at this point, where I have confidence in my artwork.

I started painting at a very young age when I was 2. Noticing that natural affinity, my mother provided all of the necessary education and support so that I could develop an array of artistic skills in visual arts and music. Studying in Russia and the US allowed me to learn different techniques and perspectives on art-making. For example, I had academic training in Russia for over three years and more of a conceptual art approach in the US. I earned my BFA at FIU and moved to New York for a Master’s degree in modern and contemporary art at Christie’s. I believe that that particular step in life put me on the right track. Living in the city, I spent a lot of time at the auction house, MoMa, Met, and galleries in Chelsea, which reminded me of my passion and inspired me to work on my art career.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an artist is fun and rewarding but not easy. Looking back, I see that my main challenge was the uncertainty of whether I should keep art as a hobby or as my career. I realized that life is too short to do something you do not fully resonate with; I feel happy and accomplished when I paint. Staying true to myself helped me to overcome this challenge.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I work in different styles: abstractions on canvas, paper, fashion illustration, digital designs, and animation. I like to evolve as an artist and explore various media, styles, and techniques. I stay inspired by the beauty and esthetics: nature, human form, texture, color, and anything that catches my attention. I believe that life is beautiful and inspiring; if you keep your eyes and mind open- you can truly experience its beauty.

I love working on large-scale canvases, 6ft x 7ft. Those are figurative abstractions composed of sensual organic shapes in a monochromatic palette. As far as my fashion sketches and digital designs- they are small, colorful, and stylized.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The beginning of my career is very special to me. It was the time when I had my first art show and was supported by all of my family and friends, the time when I started selling my first figurative abstract sketches and fashion illustrations. I received great feedback and interest, which was a big motivation to keep going and work on developing my artistic style.
