Meet Maryuri Velazquez of Margie’s Wellness Center in Broward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maryuri Velazquez.

Maryuri, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Sixteen years ago, I went to the Educating Hands School of Massage (Downtown Miami) in the quest of finding a hobby. I fell in love with massage therapy after the first massage I received from one of my classmates.  As time went by, I knew I had discovered my calling, my passion!

After graduating, I continued to work in the accounting department of a pharmaceutical company and a hockey team during the day, but during nights and weekends, I was doing house calls in Miami and Broward County.

After two and a half years, I quit my accounting job and was employed at two spas. Wanting to learn the different aspects of the massage business, I worked at spas, chiropractor’s offices, hair salons, etc.

In 2006, I opened my own practice in Hollywood, Florida and went from several house call clients to only two following me to my new place, therefore it meant starting from zero. Over time, I have been educated in different modalities and became specialized in Electro Lymphatic Drainage. In fact, my clientele has doubled because most clients seek my services for post-surgical massage and health maintenance.

My commitment is to provide state-of-the-art services and share information to improve the overall health of our community.  In a quest to provide innovative services that are effective and accessible, I have also obtained certification in Medical Thermography – an adjunct medium along with MRI, ultrasound, and mammography designed to detect the possibility of breast cancer and full body inflammation.  I make sure that what I offer is both something I approve of and benefit from, before I offer it to my clients.  That’s my guarantee of service!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Easy in the aspect that I’m doing with my hands and knowledge what I love most: working with live, palpable material.

I would say, the challenges at the beginning was to justify my prices, being that many “cookie-cutters” in the industry were popping up left and right with cheaper prices, but not the quality of service that my clients are accustomed to. My desire after several years was to bring other therapists on board, however finding one that is both passionate and creative with their skills has not been easy.

Many times, I find myself juggling with the client schedule just to make sure I can accommodate all the calls I receive daily.  However, I am certain that those who reach out to me are the ones that will wait for me to become available at the right time.

Margie’s Wellness Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The characteristics that makes my company unique is the quality, honesty, and pride with which we serve our clients with. I strongly believe that the “law of attraction” aligns me with those that I’m supposed to be servicing with my skills!

For the last 8 years, I have been contacted mostly for the post-lipo-massage, which is lymphatic drainage with hand molding massage, for those that have undergone plastic surgery. I love what I can do for my clients. I love to help them feel and look better, and I am confident that this is what I transmit to my clients. I am realistic on their expectations of the outcome after a series of treatments. My clients know me and appreciate what I do for them. In most cases, after completing their packages, they come back for my other services.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would have to say that being in business for this long and still love every bit of it makes me proud of the choice I made. I am at the time in my life where I can choose who to work on or what I prefer to do in the bodywork industry.
