Hi Marie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So I’m a Norwegian designer based in Mexico City, but spend my time between Mexico City, NYC and Miami. I started preparing all my designs for my handmade chaquira handbag brand, MarmaClub back in 2018 when I first moved to Mexico as I was so touched by the Mexican handcraft skill and saw an opportunity to created beautiful, fun, sustainable products where I could mix in my Scandinavian design background. It’s been taking me a long time to build up MarmaClub, which is short for MarieMammaClub, as my mom is my business partner and constant inspiration. Living so far form my motherland, I’ve grown into an independent person that always look for new inspirations and styles that are new to me. I do my best work when I’m outside of my comfort zone, free to create whatever comes to me without having to fit in in a certain group, culture, country, etc.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as relatively smooth road?
I can with certainty say that it’s been far from smooth. First of all, putting my designs out there have made me feel as vulnerable as I’ve never felt before. I’ve always drawn, painted and created stuff, but mostly for myself well-being. Even when doing my Bachelor degree in fashion in NYC, I would feel afraid of being judged for my “style’ or creations as the industry is so rough. However, I’ve learned to believe in myself and have faith in my creations. They are being born for a reason, and I do think that one will never feel the high if you haven’t felt the low. You have to walk the walk.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I design all my creations out of Mexico, where I live at the moment and have started to love very deeply. I’m proud and grateful to be able to learn so many new ways of creating and producing ecofriendly designs. Mexico is the first place I’ve ever seen this type of craftsmanship, 100 percent handmade with sustainability in focus. My specialty is to find new, yet sustainable styles. I think I’m great at finding sustainable. long-lasting solutions for my designs. And this is what makes me thrive. I want to create unique pieces for customers that values all the work that comes into my products. Each of bags takes 3 days to make, by 2 /3 artesanos beading each bag with only love and respect for the craftsmanship. And I aim to build my skills and my brand on these factors.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future is to continue to create new long-lasting pieces, that will bring joy but also awareness into the industry of mass production. I also aim to continue to learn new things. In every spectrum of life, but as long as I’m working as a designer, I want to focus on learning new techniques and methods that will help me continue to grow as a sustainable fashion designer.
