Meet Mariana Oppel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Oppel.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a freelance artist, illustrator, designer, ceramic maker and art teacher. I have been creating and selling my art, illustrations and designs in the forms of paintings, prints, greeting cards, books and t-shirts. As a maker: handmade dolls and other textiles, handmade paper mâché mirrors, paper baskets, jewelry and more.

Lately I been focusing on ceramics. My studio is @oceramics. I make them in small batches. I have been exploring with different clay bodies and decorating techniques. Through my career I had led arts and crafts workshops and classes in private studios and school settings, to children as well as adults. I have also been exploring different healing arts, philosophies, practices, which I combined with the visual arts and developed healing arts workshops that I facilitate.

Years of making and teaching art had shown me how important it is to create and how transformative art can be. The simple act of expressing oneself through art can help develop a sense of self-awareness and self-esteem that would not be so easily possible in any other way.

As a more personal note, I lived in different countries and love to travel to many places, which confirmed my inherent understanding that love is the glue that keeps us all(humans) together. My favorite was living in the rainforest of Costa Rica which deeply inspired me. I love nature. I love color and line and contrast. I love design, and the arts of the indigenous peoples of the world. All these inspire me. I hope that by sharing my gifts I inspire others as well.

Please tell us about your art.
At the moment I’ve been focusing on designing and making ceramics. It’s an old love which I re-discovered. But I have worked with many different materials and techniques and I’m sure I’ll keep exploring many more. What fascinates me is the creative process, making things, and figuring out ways to do it. It doesn’t really matter the medium that I use.

One of the messages I wish to transmit particularly through my paintings, is a message of oneness and unity. Overall, I wish to transmit the joy that I feel by making, and my love of color, hoping the way I use it in my art also brings joy to people. As an arts and crafts teacher and love to inspire others to create and express themselves freely.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success for me is being free to create and own my time, enjoy my life.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
