Today we’d like to introduce you to Margie West.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Nice meeting you! My name is Margie and I love to cook, bake and eat!
I started baking when my son was turning 2 (2013). I made him an 8″ round superman theme cake on his birthday, which it turned out to be so good. The kids and parents enjoyed it. I realized I could bake cakes and create designs every day! Since then I started to offer baking cakes to my friends and moms at my son’s school. It excites me when I am learning the techniques of baking. I’ve watched cake tutorial on YouTube, researched and studied more on how to decorate cakes with fondant.
Finally, every cake I make started to look better and better, its a work of art. My husband said you’re now the Queen of cake baking! I can proudly say I am a self-taught baker. There’s nothing more satisfying when you see people enjoying the cake and singing praises about it.
I was born in Central Visayas region of the Philippines, Dumaguete City. My Dad is a great cook, he usually gets invited to Fiesta’s anywhere in the nearby city, When I was little as 8 years old (if I could remember), my Dad would take me with him. He’d cook their food to feed many strangers and passers-by. Which means being a Chef was built in me since, that I didn’t even know it. Fiesta is part of Filipino tradition, that we believe sharing a meal with strangers strengthens us all.
I finished my Bachelor in Hotel and Restaurant Management in 2001 and I graduated in Master’s Degree major in Hospitality Management at Philippine Women’s University in 2004. My parents could not afford to pay for my college tuition, so I continue working; serving tables at night while finishing my degree during the day. I was lucky enough to work with an amazing boss at The Wine Press Restaurant in Manila, Philippines whom my very talented and successful mentor, Bradley Mitton, thought me a lot in the Hospitality and Culinary industry.
I’ve traveled for work and pleasure to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Virginia USA and Qatar UAE. However, I spend more time in Singapore for an on the job training in Hospitality Management at Marriott Hotel, Orchard, Singapore. I am very thankful for that experience, I was able to understand the true meaning of diversity. After I finished my Master’s Degree in Hospitality, I become an instructor at De Lasalle Dasmarinas Cavite for over 3 years. Learning and sharing knowledge is an accomplishment.
In 2006, I decided to move to the United States, to find my luck. I moved here in Florida without a job, no family, no friends except myself with few bucks in my wallet enough to buy ticket way back. But I am very determined, I looked for an apartment nearby downtown West Palm Beach. I found a job as a server at E.R Bradleys, this place helps me a lot as a starting point of my life. God was with me all the time.
After a year of being in the United States, I was able to learn better English and able to go around without not much of hesitation. I met my loving husband Jeremy in 2007 who makes my life more meaningful with our most precious son Matthew who is very smart, so curious about life. Today, I am still working full time as a Benefits Specialist in a very fast-phased environment. However, when I am home, I love to bake.
In February 2016, I put my mind into it. I created a website and purchased the domain name. Every day seems exciting just thinking about the orders coming in and how people recognize and telling me I should start a business. Early this year, its official, West Boca Sweets LLC has arrived! I make delicious, work of art cakes, cupcakes, cake pops for any occasion – whenever, wherever, either at your home get-together, parties or corporate meetings.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t really an easy road yet, I am not completely there yet. I am currently working full time as Benefits Specialist, therefore my time is split. It is hard to focus on one thing. I wanted to give up my work and concentrate on my baking but I cannot make that decision as of yet.
One of the challenges here is finding the right person to work with. Currently, I am looking for someone to assist me on the weekend with when I have a lot of orders. I love doing this therefore, I do not see really as a big challenge to me, it is an experience.

West Boca Sweets LLC just started 2 years ago. In that period of time, I am seeing the fun and enjoyment of it. I have been having many repeat business from last year. I am excited to create unique cakes, expressing ideas to my customers and making what they are looking for.
West Boca Sweets, specializes in cakes, cupcakes and cake pops. All products are freshly homemade to order. The most popular product is Cake Pops, I have a regular client from an insurance company orders cake pops by dozens to bring them to give away. Now it becomes the most on demand. I am very proud of the taste and design of my product, Essentially, people love the product first through their vision, so therefore the design must be awesome.
Second, people taste your product and it is delicious, that makes them keep coming back. The fact that is freshly made to order, that makes me set apart from others.
What were you like growing up?
I am shy quiet person growing up, though I love to play ball, volleyball, basketball, bowling. I am active and love sports. Now, I am outgoing, love to eat and adventurous in taste wise. I love to try different restaurants. Then when I taste particular food, I will try to copy it at home. It’s normally successful.
