Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Schwitalla Villena and Susan Schwitalla Culmo.
Linda and Susan are sisters who were born and raised in Miami. They have been stay-at-home Moms for years, and run a successful accounting and QuickBooks consulting business from their home offices. For the last eight years, they have also worked on developing their pillowcase and bringing it to market.
Linda’s daughter had an invention convention at school and needed an idea that solves an everyday problem. It was late and Julia had wet hair from her shower. As she placed a towel on her pillow, Linda had the idea, and the DryZzz was born… It is a dual purpose pillowcase, one side is regular pillowcase fabric and the other is microfiber backed by a waterproof liner. DryZzz protects your pillow and you sleep on a dry surface.
As a CPA and a lawyer, they knew nothing of getting a product manufactured or selling it in the marketplace. But, they persevered, and DryZzz is now patented and trademarked, and has been featured on NBC 6 in the Mix, written about on Today.com and other websites, and is sold online at Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond.com, and DryZzz.com.
They also have sold directly to customers at local markets and events in South Florida, such as The Harvest Fest at Tamiami Fair Grounds, Carnaval on the Mile, Our Lady of Lourdes Bobcat Bazaar, the Miami Beach Home and Remodeling Show, and the Islamorada Gigantic Nautical Flea Market.
A portion of all their proceeds goes to Sofia’s Hope, Inc. to fund research related to pediatric cancer and cardiac damage caused by chemotherapy. It is a Not-For-Profit Corporation founded in memory of Linda’s daughter’s friend, Sofia Blanco.
We’re always struck by how great it is to pursue your passion, – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, we have had some major hurdles along the way!
Two years ago, when we were poised for our first big national exposure as one of the Good Morning America: Deals and Steals products, we had to pull DryZzz at the last minute from being included, because $30,000 of extra inventory we ordered arrived defective from our manufacturer.
That same year, the night before the start of the Miami Beach Home and Remodeling show (a big event for us), warnings were announced all over the evening news, advising people not to go outside because of mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus. The attendance of the event was around 4,000 instead of the expected 40,000. But, even with the low turnout, we still managed to sell over a hundred DryZzz!
Despite these setbacks and other obstacles, we continue pushing forward and learning from our experiences.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with DryZzz – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are proud of how far we’ve come with DryZzz – bringing an idea to life as a product in the marketplace. We didn’t know anything about patents, trademark, manufacturing, advertising, social media marketing or sales, and have had to learn how to do all of these things. The best part is that when people see how our product works, they are eager to buy it and use it. It solves an everyday problem that a lot of people deal with when they sleep with wet hair, sweat or drool.
We are proud of being sisters that work together. We have total trust in each other, push each other, want success for each other, and help each other through the hard times. We have a very special bond and feel grateful that we have the opportunity to be business partners. And, as DryZzz has grown, we have been fortunate to be joined by our other sister, Mary Schwitalla Opoien, who currently heads up our shipping department!
DryZzz is extremely proud to contribute a portion of our proceeds to Sofia’s Hope for the important research they are doing.
What sets us apart is that we don’t take no for an answer, and we will never stop working hard!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, we envision DryZzz being widely known and available in even more retail, wholesale, and online outlets, both nationally and internationally. We work every day towards this goal!
