Today we’d like to introduce you to Lili Sm.
Lili, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love story with makeup artistry began when I was almost five years old. My grandmother was a talented portraitist and had worked at photo studios. She was an artist, a painter and used oil color for her photo-based portraits. Once I saw her painting young lady portrait. I remember myself taking a brush with red color on it and saying: “This lady is pretty, but red lips will make her outstanding.” My grandma reaction was: “Wow, great idea. Do you want to try that on me?” Years after years, I had been taking my mothers lipsticks and eye shadows when she wasn’t looking and trying them on myself. When I was eight, I went to the High School of Arts. Art and makeup are a part of my life. I began my career like MUA in Israel attending the prestigious iL MAKIAGE school completing Pro Makeup program and trained in many different areas of makeup, from a subtle, natural look all the way to a red-carpet glam look. I’ve been working within the beauty industry for over seven years exploring different aspects of the industry.
When I came to the USA, I was forced to start from the beginning. I remember myself doing makeup for free to girls in order to build new relationships and new connections which can help me to find real clients. Oh yeah… now I am thinking and laughing.
However, it was a good experience which helped me to understand who I want to be, what is my mission and what I need to do to achieve it.
I was really lucky to meet my soulmate, phenomenal photographer Olga Nicole Koleeny who has an amazing vision of art. Together, we had done many projects and we continue to do it till now.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.
In every story, there is a crucial moment which can break you or make you stronger.
The art was and will be criticized by people who related to art and people who have no idea what is it.
I believe artistry is a flow which comes from your heart, from your soul. And the flow will catch the right people who will love your work who will keep going with you.
But you also should be ready for people not going to love what you do. That’s ok. You are not a banknote of $100 to please everyone.
And of course, be ready getting bullied. There are always people who will not believe in you, people who will judge you, people who will try to teach you in other words… to change you. sometimes those people just unhappy with themselves. They are getting bored course they have standard life, standard work and they accept only standards. They see something in you that they can’t have and they can’t do, so they will try to bring you down. Shake them off and remember that it’s your way.
I was smart enough do not stop and keep going. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence and determination.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Lovestory Makeup & Hair – what should we know?
The biggest passion in my work is to build new “beauty standards.“ For the last half year, I’ve been focusing on creative beauty projects. I’ve been working with professional photographers and for each project, we are trying to represent a new idea, every photo has a message. It’s not just about a pretty face, flawless makeup, and perfect hair. It’s about temper, spirit, an attitude of personality.
What were you like growing up?
Right now, I am a person who is searching for people who use to think out of a box like me. And I would like one day to build a strong team of public persons, photographers, designers, and other artists to show all people the idea of breaking beauty standards.
