Meet Lexi Montgomery of Darling Web Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Montgomery.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lexi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always thought I’d be an actress or model. Little did I know, my “dream” was built on significance.

Being “pretty” is rewarded in society – and being a woman in business is scrutinized.

I’ve been working with software and design since I was 11. I had a profitable company before I was 13.

But I decided to pursue acting. Being an actress in Hollywood was draining, and I had no creative freedom. Between set dressers, writers, directors, producers, acting coaches, managers, agents, and critics – I realized that I had committed my life to being significant in other people’s eyes. I hated it.

I struggled to rehearse scenes for auditions, but loved building websites and creating recipes for the original blog that pulled me out to LA.

When I created Darling, I was at the lowest point in my life. I also had a failing marriage due to the financial stress of failing as an actress. I left my dream behind and moved across the country without a plan.

Luckily, I had multiple websites converting at 25-39% before taking on clients and starting my digital agency – and that gave me the confidence to compete with traditional “techies.”

Within 2 weeks of moving to Miami, I met a plastic surgeon and sold $806k of plastic surgery in 72 days. I increased conversion rates for the surgeon by 10% from February to April which brought in 230 new patients.

Under pressure, I learned to use my ability to “attract” to create real, lasting value with my web development knowledge and marketing savvy. With Darling, I combined experiential knowledge with innovative & seductive branding. Our branding gives new meaning to the term “digital agency.”

I now have several international clients, and features in notable magazines and blogs. I think my innovative approach to branding makes us a company to watch. I have received awards from the Zonta International, the Ryan Howard Foundation, Tech Trust Miami, and the Cedric The Entertainer Foundation for achievements as a minority woman in business. I have been featured on Everyday Power Blog and moderate the “Divine Feminine Alchemy” community (1,300 women). I also am speaking on a panel of female entrepreneurs at an event sponsored by WeWork at the end of the month.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s funny because when I started my company, I had no intention of branding it the way I did. However, people would say “you should be a model” or “you should be a sugar baby” – oh, and the worst – “you should be an escort, they make good money.”

Can you believe that last one came from a woman?!

The implications were:

1) You’ll never succeed in tech and
2) Escorting is a better career for you.

So I began using “I own an escort service” as an ice breaker at networking events.

I try to take the crookeds with the straights when female entrepreneurs are expected to be yoga teachers and etsy sellers.

Another difficulty has been people approaching me expecting me to just donate my time – but I suppose that’s normal for a business owner. For every one person that wants to help me or do business together, there’s 5 to 10 that want me to help them without an even exchange.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Darling Web Design – what should we know?
I make custom web solutions that attract customers & get them to buy from businesses (i.e. SEO, SEM, copywriting, blogging, PR outreach, full web design & development, UI/UX, custom quote engines, email capture, landing pages, FTC & Google compliance, etc)

I’m an online scaling & conversion expert.

I am very good at 3 things:

1. Reeling in thousands of visitors (SEO)
2. Building trust and authority instantly (Web Design UI/UX)
3. Converting those visitors into buyers (Copywriting)

Case Study: Within the first week of living in Miami, I met a plastic surgeon and we began working together. From February to April of 2017.

In that window, I 10x the number of patients he was getting.

That increased his conversion from under 10% to 25%.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The quality most important to my success is humility.

I’ve lived for “significance” my entire life. I was very approval seeking and the entertainment industry is very “all about me.”

I’ve had a lot better results when I offer free advice to upcoming entrepreneurs on linked in and really treat each client’s site like own.

I spend every dollar like my own and protect their vision for their business in everything I do.

I protect my team from clients trying to take advantage of their skills and I protect clients by having a top-notch team.

I can only do all this by humbling myself and not thinking about what I want as much as what my business is doing for others.

Most of my clients are also surgeons, private security companies, lawyers, and insurance companies so I have a lot of respect for what they do for society – it literally pays to remember to be humble.
