Meet Leilani Sanchez and Lisa Tam of MIMO Market in Wynwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leilani Sanchez and Lisa Tam.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We both studied business and fashion merchandising at Florida State University. Wanting to pursue careers in the fashion publication industry, we both moved to New York City and worked for different fashion magazines. The industry was fast paced and exciting but ironically, we both felt we wanted to do something more. Lisa moved on to become a buyer at a major department store and Leilani moved back to Florida to take a job opportunity in marketing. We both ended up in the retail world and worked in the industry for many years learning a great deal about the business. During this time we had always stayed in touch and would daydream about starting our own business one day. We had great careers so the idea was just a thought and put to the side for some time. Eventually, we found ourselves in the same place in life… wanting more and the corporate ladder to growth wasn’t going to fill this void. We revisited the idea of opening our own store and just said, “why not.” It took us over a year but we built a business plan and got the ball rolling. Lisa moved back to Miami and eventually reached a point where we had to pull the trigger and take this idea and make it to a reality. Three years later here we are!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Pursuing a dream is rarely a journey filled with smooth roads. Building our business was challenging but rewarding through it all. The initial steps you need to take to open a business was a great learning experience for us. We were new to the world of commercial real estate and also had to figure out what permits we needed, how to get them, and hiring contractors were just a few of the many things that we had to research. Once the store was open, we had to then figure out our day-to-day operations and devote all of our time to working at the store and building the business. It was tiring and we didn’t have much of a social life, but we did it and it was very much worth the sacrifice. We learned more about our own business and how we wanted to run it. We created a foundation that has grounded our store and set us up for a successful future.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
MIMO Market is a boutique that is home to eclectic, contemporary, clothing and accessories for women and men. We aren’t just about setting the trends. Each piece you find from MIMO Market are hand picked and curated with our customer in mind. Most of the designers we bring on have a story, a passion and a vibe that is unique and special. Our store is located in the heart of Wynwood, Miami’s art district so we’re all about personal style and carrying pieces that inspire people to just be who they are. We’re proud of being a small business and having the opportunity to build relationships with our customers and our community.

What were you like growing up?
It’s not surprising that Lisa ended up being an entrepreneur. Growing up in Miami, both of her parents owned businesses and she grew up watching them work hard to earn their living. She always had a unique personal style, loved all kinds of music, and always surrounded herself with good friends. Determined and hard-working, her love affair with fashion began at the tender age of 15, where she dove head-first into the frantic environment of a teenage clothing store. Lisa was always good with numbers and analytics, she’s an excel sheet guru and can make anything into some kind of formula. She genuinely loves fashion and has always kept up with current events and trends. Lisa has an inner drive of a monster truck, she sets goals and works tirelessly until she reaches them.

Leilani grew up as an army brat, living in various states and countries throughout childhood. Though, it was challenging to move around as a kid, it definitely molded her to become a person that is social and adaptable to any environment. Her parent’s and grandmother owned businesses so she caught some of that entrepreneurial spirit. She had the interest of many teenage girls growing up in the late 90’s and early 2000’s…. fashion, boy bands and her friends. She started working at 15 years old for a small business and learned early about day-to-day operations of running a store. By high school, she knew she wanted to someday open her own clothing boutique. Always determined, she too was a “goal-digger,” setting goals and working hard to get what she wanted.
