Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Goldblatt.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lauren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A year ago, my brother visited me in Florida and saw that I had taught my 3 and a half-year-old son how to read. He went back home and tried to teach his 4-year-old how to read, but didn’t know where to start.
Using my background as an early education teacher, I created some reading videos for my nephew – and he LOVED them. I shared them with my friends with young kids all over the country and they kept asking for more.
I searched online for similar products for early readers, but couldn’t find anything.
Everything I found was very fast paced, overstimulating and too flashy for a young child’s mind.
My brother had the idea to turn the reading videos into a business so together in October 2017 we launched kickstart reading.
Has it been a smooth road?
When you start your own business, you know you’re taking a chance. There are challenges every single day. You just have to stay open-minded, listen and learn from as many people as you can. You need a lot of resilience and plenty of patience. Starting a business is challenging, but that’s also what makes it rewarding and exciting!
When you have kids at home, they are your priority. I do a lot of work when they go to bed. Raising a family is like running a business. Things are constantly going wrong. And you think everybody else knows what they’re doing. But we’re really all just winging it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kickstart Reading story. Tell us more about the business.
When your child is ready to start reading — we say ages 3-6 but every child is different — it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with where to start and how you can help.
I made the videos so they’re easy for kids to follow and learn from and simple enough for parents to be a part of their child’s reading. I want to empower parents to be a part of their kid’s education.
Kickstart Reading videos are like having your child sit 1-on-1 with a personal tutor.
I move at a slow pace that’s right for a young child’s developing mind.
I help build their confidence in reading with lots of praise and encouragement.
And the best part is the videos are only 2 minutes long.
That’s short enough to keep a young child’s attention and leave them asking for more.
We’re different from a lot of educational apps out there. We are not a video game. We’re not flashy and addictive. We’re screen time you can feel good about.
Kickstart reading videos are designed to do one thing: help teach your child how to read.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Our kids are going to be more and more exposed to technology and screens.
Like most parents, I have mixed feelings about this.
There are awesome learning tools out there for our kids.
I think we can take a more active role in our kid’s relationship with technology.
As a busy parent, I know it’s not always easy.
