Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura “Lala” Fernandez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lala. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for photography goes as far back as when I was a little girl. My grandfather who was a doctor, his hobby was photography, the old school art of photography! Growing up in a family of doctors and professionals in the medical field, I graduated high school and went on to obtain a Psychology double major in School Counseling and Mental Health. While I was completing my many hours of internship, I needed to find a small part-time to squeeze in with my busy schedule. I decided to put my childhood love of photography to use and so Studiobylala was born! It started small and stayed that way for some time while I continued working in my field and also started a family. As passionate as I am about the field of psychology and everything I studied, my heart was always in photography. One day, I decided that I was going to make the jump and give Studiobylala my complete attention and time. Slowly but surely, Studiobylala began to grow each year a little bit at a time.
Just a few years went by and we were able to bring on board our second full time photographer to be part of the team, Evelyn Mazola. Evelyn had the same similar background as I, where she was also around a camera from a very young age, given that her father was a very well known photographer in Cuba. We also brought on board my long time high school friend, Yillian, who’s artistic eye and touch when it comes to editing, gives all our final photographs that extra WOW factor. Fast forward to today, Studiobylala is now a team of photographers and editors who all share the passion for photography and capturing beautiful lifelong memories for our clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There is no such thing as a smooth road when you have your own business. Being a business owner in any field has its ups and downs, its success and failures. Just the fact that my education and family’s history was in the medical field, that was a challenge on its own when I first announced I was stepping away from that to pursue my passion for photography and make a business out of it. Many thought, I was nuts at the beginning, after so many years of university and hours of internships, to now just walk away from that and pick up a camera full time. There will always be obstacles and challenges especially in photography which can be such a competitive field, but when you do it with passion and true love for the camera and the subject there is nothing that can beat that.
Please tell us about Studiobylala.
Studiobylala is company that tries to cater to the everyday people who want to have their photos taken and turned into lifelong preserved memories. We are mostly known for our maternity and kids sessions. In the early stages of Studiobylala, I was pregnant with our first child and I remember calling a couple of photographers who I followed on Instagram and loved their work, asking about maternity packages. However, their packages were a little bit above what my husband and I could afford at the time. I made the decision right there that no matter how big Studiobylala got, we would always be competitive when it came to pricing our packages. Where anyone could reach out to Studiobylala and book a fair priced package and get great quality results.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There have been many lessons learned along the way thus far and I am sure there are still many more to learn. However, I would not change or do anything differently. Each of those lessons has taught me something valuable and allowed me to better myself and Studiobylala.
