Meet Kristin Barton of KISO Swim School in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Barton.

Kristin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started off with a full schedule of private classes in the Miami Area. Acquiring too many clients to manage, I looked to go a new route. Driven by a passion for teaching stroke mechanics efficiently, promoting water safety and bringing the values and magic of aquatic life to local communities, I formed KISO Swim School.

Sharing 20+ years of swimming knowledge, I am able to bring experience to KISO Swim School cultured through my personal swimming and coaching career, as well as from a Bachelor Degree in Recreation and Sports Management from the University of Florida in 2008.

As a collegiate swimmer at UF, I had the opportunity to swim alongside Olympians and under the coaching instruction of various top USA Swimming coaches. This guidance came under world renown coaches including the 2012 London Games, U.S. Olympic Head Coach, Gregg Troy, former Gator Swim Club Head Age Group Coach, Nancy Hennessy and former Gulliver Prep Head Coach, Jeff Poppell, just to name a few.

Through coaching guidance from the greats and hands-on research of my own, KISO Swim School boasts a fun and unique learning experience unlike any other swim school in Florida.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road was not smooth starting out. Finding pool space and decent rental fees was a huge challenge from the start. This is what drove me north to the Boca Raton Area. I started at Florida Atlantic University then expanded to West Boca. Though pool space is an ongoing issue, KISO Swim School is excited to broaden it’s expansion to the Miami and Wellington Areas in the near future.

Another major challenge was learning the market. This entails the time schedule for swim lessons, the price point and overall demand for my service. Starting initially this is very tough. As you learn and grow though, it becomes easier to research markets in order to expand and excel.

Lastly, bringing in hired help with experience was a major factor to overcome. My swim school offers part-time positions, which is often popular for college students. Reliability is key, yet searching for candidates that not only had the experience, but that had a passion for teaching swimming was hard to find Ensuring my instructors fully understood the curriculum through extensive training and establishing the swim school’s philosophy was tough. I am happy to say we have a wonderful team on board now that is making a positive impact daily!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the KISO Swim School story. Tell us more about the business.
With experience as a national level swimmer and ASCA level 2 coach, including multiple safety training certifications, I am excited to bring every aspect of water safety education and stroke development to a global front. Implementing a strong belief system in core value development, in addition to quality over quantity, is what propels the program. Through building confidence, developing pride and honing proper technique, clients have fun while excelling in their respective level. KISO Swim School also provides a platform to fully prepare clients for a smooth transition into the competitive field or just to make swimming a lifestyle sport!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With a hopeful expansion to two new areas within the next year, KISO Swim School strives to make communities happier, healthier and safer through swimming. Drowning is unfortunately so prevalent in Florida and we hope to be a voice that reaches our families and offers the best safeguard – swim lessons. Available to all age ages, it’s a lifestyle sport that everyone can enjoy. Eventually, KISO Swim School would like to franchise and branch outside of Florida to relay our philosophy to others.
