Today we’d like to introduce you to King Mackey.
King, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
To be honest, I never envisioned myself being where I am today, not to say I never believed in myself. However, I would not say I am the standard product of what is stereotypically produced out of Liberty City. Fortunately, I am an alumnus of Florida Memorial University, and I am now the first member of my family to graduate from college. My bachelor’s degree is in management information systems, and I also have a master’s degree in business administration. That alone is a significant accomplishment coming from where I’m from.
All-in-all my journey with modeling started unexpectedly, my close friend is a stylist, and she was working on a project; She called me randomly one day and asked for a favor. She asked would I mind being a model for her; she wanted to style me and take a few detailed shots. The idea was pitched, and since I never modeled before, I told her that I’d give it a go. On the day of the photoshoot, we unsuccessfully scouted the Miami Shores area for a scenic location until someone eventually let us use their property for the photoshoot, and magic was created. This was back in May of 2017; I can remember when I first saw the shoot’s visuals and couldn’t believe that it was me in front of the camera. Everything about the shoot flowed smoothly, and it all came naturally for me. I honestly shocked myself, and from that day forward, this became my new hobby and passion. I posted the finished products to my Instagram, and it received a lot of love and positive feedback. After my first photo shoot, my friend and I later collaborated on several photoshoots; the photos went viral and were shared across social networks. The accolades we received from those photoshoots inspired me to further pursue this hobby-now-passion. I always had an eye for the latest fashion trends; So I began to work more independently, styling myself, which was a challenge because I wore more urban-style clothes. I had to learn how to be versatile and switch up to more casual and formal looks.
As I continue to advance with my modeling career, I plan to produce more content and network more for my work to be seen by a more massive crowd. My goal is to be a print model and brand ambassador in a variety of industries. I am now reaching out to work with different photographers and stylists to create and capture different visuals being that they all have their own ways of producing magic. Also, collaborating with other models is something I’m interested in to add to my portfolio and portray my flexibility.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Perseverance is the word that defines it all for me. Modeling may seem as simple as taking a picture, but it’s a lot more that goes into it to make that picture more appealing. The time and dedication that it takes to pull it all together, the right wardrobe/styling, the right photographer, and planning effectively to make the photoshoot run smoothly. Maintaining my modeling ambitions while balancing my everyday life has been challenging because I cannot consistently produce new content. To gain more exposure, I had to learn to adjust since this is something that I am serious about accomplishing. Along with that, producing quality work may get my content into someone’s hands that can offer me the opportunities I am looking for.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Outside of pursuing modeling, I am one of the three directors for the Kings of Glory Foundation Inc, mentoring program. The mission and purpose are to develop minority youth academic and social capabilities while enhancing their leadership skills, decision-making skills, and critical thinking skills. Where I’m from, most of our minority boys only see sports or rapping as the only way to succeed or escape their circumstances.
Not everyone has that same goal, and some people simply want to be different. My goal is to show these young men another way of life and understanding that the world has more to offer than what they may be accustomed to. Living in a time where parents are outliving their children, I think positive black men must step up and help make a difference in our youth’s lives. The time that I spend and invest with these young men is less time to be in the streets or make poor decisions in their communities.
Humbly, my confidence alone sets me apart from anyone. I can be versatile when it comes to wearing different clothing styles and comfortably produce different looks when it comes to fashion. Overall, my authenticity and genuine personality set me apart from others. I am outgoing and able to adapt to anyone I come in contact with; I naturally bring positive energy to any atmosphere. Having good character can open many doors and opportunities; I am passionate about what I do, and I want to share that with others, whether in pictures or in person.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In all honesty, I wouldn’t change anything at all. I’m a firm believer in everything happens for a reason, and within every lesson, there’s a blessing. And what you go through builds character, so if it wasn’t for the things you experienced, you wouldn’t be the person you are today.
