Meet Khinuu Nefer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khinuu Nefer.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My love for the West African Dance grows each and every year. After moving from Atlanta to Palm Beach County, Florida I immediately started to search for classes. To my disappointment the closest class was over an hour away. I decided to create my company Afrique Ngozi Dance & Drum and began to offer weekly West African Dance Classes in Lake Worth. From there my company has blossomed to more than I could envision. I now offer classes with the Palm Beach County Library System, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, The City of Boynton Beach, The City of Delray Beach, and local performances for schools, weddings, festivals, and private functions. We also offer a Children’s West African Dance Company Performing company.

Please tell us about your art.
My name is Khinuu Nefer and I’m a Professional West African Dancer and Owner of Afrique Ngozi Dance and Drum. I teach classes and choreograph for my Performing West African Children’s company. The inspiration behind my dance career are the youth that I work with they are so eager to learn and their excitement keeps me motivated. I want to keep the community engage with West African Arts. I offer many community events to educate about the traditions and culture of Africa. I want my students and various audiences to take away knowledge about Africa and to talk about Africa’s influence in different genres of dance.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
The role of the artists has changed dramatically for my company many of my students have never taken a West African Dance Class before. I receive many great reviews on how good the class makes them feel and how they look forward to Friday Nights. Dancing is healing and a great stress reliever it’s a wonderful feeling for my program to be considered a place where they can unwind, feel relaxed, and comfortable.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best way to support my work is to Like my page on Facebook Afrique Ngozi Dance & Drum INC. and follow us on Instagram Afrique_Ngozi there you can find out all of the latest happenings with the company. We offer weekly West African Dance Classes every Friday Night at Downtown Dance Studio 805 Lucerne Ave Lake Worth, FL 33460.
