Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylenne Ramirez.
Kaylenne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I know this might sound cliche but I have loved art since my coloring book days. My dad used to sit with me and teach me how to draw characters from my books and my mom taught me how to color inside the lines. When it came time to learn how to write in school I was so excited when they began to teach script. I was immediately hooked! I practiced whenever I could because it was fun for me. Throughout my school years, Art class was always my favorite and I took as many of them as I was allowed. During my Junior and Senior years in high school, I had one of the best art teachers who helped me develop and grow artistically. He taught my Fashion Design class and I turned out to be good at drawing the human form and clothing. So much I almost went to FIT to study Fashion Design but I lacked the sewing skills required to attend the school. During my senior year in high school I was named “Best Artist” but never would I have thought that it would lead to something in the future. All I knew at this point was that I loved art and I wanted to have my own business one day.
I went on to graduate college with a Bachelors’s degree in Fashion Marketing and Merchandising to get a business background. That same year after graduating college I moved from New Jersey to Florida, put my career on hold, and art was just a hobby. I got married and a few years later found myself pregnant with our first child. At this point, I started drawing again and writing. I always wanted my business to have a bigger purpose than myself and whatever I did I wanted it to point to Jesus and my faith. Things came together quickly and I believe God does everything in its perfect timing. So I started Handwritten Hope Studio in 2017 when I was about four months pregnant and never looked back. Growth has been slow and steady, and that’s okay. My purpose is to spread hope through God’s word and that’s what I’m striving for.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say it’s been challenging because I want to see growth for myself at a faster rate. When I started Handwritten Hope Studio I was pregnant with my first child and a year after she was born I became pregnant with my second daughter. They are my priority and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m still learning that it’s okay to grow slow because not everyone’s business journey is the same.
Please tell us about your business.
I started my modern hand lettering business with the purpose to spread hope through God’s word. I don’t think anyone can say that they’ve never been through a difficult time or some kind of struggle in their life. I know I have, but the one thing that has kept me is the hope I have in Christ through His word. It’s the one thing I know to be so powerful that it can transform someone’s life, and this is what I want to fill people’s spaces with.
As a small creative business, I think in the beginning you want to try out many different avenues and with the time you start to focus on what you’re good at. For myself, custom bible verses are what I started with and it will continue to be the main part of my business. This coming year I’m also preparing to launch verse prints and quotes which I’m very excited about. Along with this, I’ve always had a soft spot for weddings and this will also continue to be an extension of my work — wedding signage, envelope addressing, custom handwritten vows, etc.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity in culture and how accessible many things are. I’ve always been a city girl and I think this is what attracts me to Miami. I also love how much the art and creative aspect of it continue to flourish; not to mention so many great coffee spots popping up. The least thing I like about our city is the traffic! I think this is self explanatory and many would agree, right?
