Meet Kayla Rodriguez of KDL Creative Consulting in Remote (Jacksonville)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Rodriguez.

Kayla, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I wish I could say that I had this all planned out and that I was ready to be an entrepreneur, but that truth is, I wasn’t. I could not get a job after I graduated, and after five months of nothing, I had to start making some money. I saw a request for an infographic in a Facebook group connected to my university (It’s all about the U!), and the rest is history. I began completing more design jobs, getting more referrals, and now, nearly five years later, KDL Creative Consulting has worked with countless entrepreneurs, small businesses, students, authors, agencies and other entities in the areas of graphic design, marketing, social media and beyond.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s almost funny when I get asked the question about a journey assessment. The quick answer is not even close, and at times, I would have definitely preferred to give up than continue. I am SO glad I didn’t!

I would say one of the biggest struggles is being your own biggest cheerleader. In the world of entrepreneurship, especially in the beginning, there are a lot of high highs and low lows, and those low lows can seem even lower when you’re building something alone. The road can get very isolated, and it forces you to build up your willpower muscle. It also forces you to answer the question: “Are you going to give up, or are you going to believe in yourself and keep going?”

Please tell us about KDL Creative Consulting.
KDL Creative Consulting is a modern media agency that specializes in brand, client and social media management and graphic design. We want our clients to know that the market isn’t oversaturated and that there is room for them to reach their audience. There are people that need them!

Plus, everything we do for our clients is customized. No one entity has the same scope as another, and we pride ourselves in personalized marketing plans—these plans including social media ads, SEO, events, etc. and answering questions from “What social media outlets should I utilize?” to “Should I start a podcast?”—for each up-and-comer to get off the ground and begin to fly.

What were you like growing up?
As I kid, I was “nerdy” in the fact that I was an overachiever (as my peers liked to say). I found joy in reading and learning, and I liked technology. Even so, school and most other things came relatively easy to me, and I didn’t have to try very hard, which I think made me lazy, overly optimistic and even entitled. Even in college. I could have—and really should have—gotten myself more together, and I would have performed better; however, when it came to the majority of my classes, I really just did the work, took the tests, whatever I needed to do and performed decently well I’d say, especially for all of the extracurriculars I was in.

That’s why KDL, entrepreneurship, and even adulthood has been such a challenge for me. Not only is it actually hard, but I also have had to really work on applying myself. At this point, I will say that I’ve truly welcomed the challenge! Some days are better (much better) than others, but I think that you have to ride the waves and take them head-on! (I also don’t really have a choice when it comes to the adulthood part, so I might as well enjoy it and knock it out of the park if I have to do it, right?)
