Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Kepler.
Kathleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for wedding planning all started when my daughter got engaged.
We spent a year planning her wedding. While many people feel the wedding planning process is stressful (and I know it can be!), I had so much fun helping my daughter plan her wedding—I didn’t want it to end! My daughter’s wedding vendors kept telling me I should become a wedding planner. So after my daughter got married in March 2010, I started to seriously consider becoming a wedding planner. I assisted a few local wedding planners, and I helped some of my friends plan their daughters’ weddings.
With more experience under my belt, I decided it was time to go out on my own. I attended Broward College and became a Certified Wedding and Event Planner. In early 2011, I entered an essay contest about newfound passion and was selected to be on the Today show with actress Marlo Thomas and celebrity wedding planner David Tutera.
After our segment, I got to chat with David over lunch and ask him a lot of questions about starting my wedding business. He was a great mentor to me when I was first starting out.
Weddings by Kathleen opened for business in August 2011. After I started my business, a publisher contacted me about authoring a quick-reference guide to wedding planning—the guide is sold nationwide, and I give a complimentary copy to each of my brides. I am where I am today because I discovered something I truly have a passion for and I did not give up on my dream to become a wedding planner.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took about two to three years before I got an increase in clients.
At one point, I thought about quitting, but I stuck with it and I am very glad I did. There have been bumps along the way, but each experience has given me the confidence and capability to tackle anything.
Every wedding I do, I learn something. And I am constantly learning and keeping up with the industry—I continue training through workshops and conferences, I read industry books and magazines, and I am part of professional wedding-planning discussion groups.
If I could start over, I only wish I would have discovered my passion for wedding planning much earlier.
I started my wedding planning business at the ripe old age of 53. I was concerned at first that my age would discourage clients from hiring me, but my age has actually been an asset. Some of my clients like the fact that I am older; they have told me specifically they didn’t want to hire someone too young.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in wedding management, also known as day-of/month-of coordination. A bride will plan her wedding (i.e., select her venue, vendors, and décor), and I will come in and put all the pieces together so she will have a stress-free wedding day that will flow smoothly and perfectly. If a bride needs help finding a venue or vendors, I recommend venues and reputable vendors. Once a bride signs a contract with me, I am available to her from that point on via calls, texts, and emails, and I assist her with any and every detail she needs help with.
Having built a business mostly on referrals, I am proud of my reputation I have created for myself. I have a huge sense of commitment to my clients, and I strive for perfection. I am dedicated and passionate, and I focus on making sure my clients have a flawless wedding.

I want my brides and grooms to have the wedding that they want, a wedding that shows their personality, their vision. I am here to guide them in the wedding planning process, to give them as much information as possible, and to help make it an enjoyable, non-stressful experience for them. I treat my brides as if they are my own daughter, and I will go above and beyond for them and work as many uncountable hours as needed to make sure their wedding day is perfect.
What were you like growing up?
I was the middle child growing up; I have an older brother and a younger sister. We had a wonderful childhood growing up in Key West, Florida — playing out doors a lot, riding bikes, playing tennis, kickball, going to the beach, bowling, etc. I had lots of friends that I still see to this day. I always wanted to be a “teacher” when I was a young girl, but never had a real passion for it. I married young (19 years old), and became a legal secretary, bookkeeper, and office manager. I’ve always been extremely organized and detailed and am known by all my friends and family as “very organized” and a “perfectionist.”
