Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Roberts.
Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I graduated college, I went to work for SavON Drugs, retail, out in Los Angeles. I loved the job, and interacting with the customers. I quickly excelled in my position and learned that my dream was to be a store manager. Three years in, I was up for a promotion and my district manager told me if I slept with him, he would give me the promotion. I laughed in his face and walked away. From there, I interviewed with IDS, the old Ameriprise Financial. And because I was a planner by nature, I felt that getting into the financial planning industry would be a great fit. My dad, who was then a general agent for New England Life, called and offered me a job. I had no idea what my dad did for a living, until that moment. Working in a family business you end up doing a lot of different things. Throughout my career, I have managed an office, managed agents, and was a wholesaler for life insurance. In 2005, I experienced more harassment by a male stockbroker for the job I had done for him. At that moment, I declared myself capable to be independent, moved on to build my own practice my own way successfully and never turning back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My biggest struggle was being confident and believing in myself. Believing that I could be a successful independent financial planner. Once I made the decision to move forward to run my own business, I realized I had all the confidence and determination I needed within myself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Emerald Financial Group – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Emerald Financial Group works to educate and empower women to take control of their financial futures. We make it a priority to educate our clients, helping them understand their investment options, how they work and why we believe they may be right for them. We thoroughly explain everything we bring to the table, so there is clear understanding and reasoning as to why they have been recommended. We empower our clients to make the choices that are right for them. We feel that one should never be encouraged to do something they are not comfortable with. At the end of the day, it is ultimately their decision and their future. Once our clients are educated and empowered we guide and teach them how to take control of their finances.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
Our plan for the future is to build a team of all women financial professionals serving women clients that find themselves to be suddenly single, either by death, divorce or choice.
