Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen “KD” Douglas.
Karen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first got my feet wet in management around 2006. At the time, I shared an office with Lex Pierre (Of Lex Promotions) which back then we handled a lot of the promotional material for many of the well-known clubs, events, local acts, and labels. My passion has always been in the arts especially music so when the opportunity came to provide services to some of the artists here in Miami I would always go the extra mile. I had been introduced to Trina through a mutual friend and some people at the label she was signed to back then. It started out more or less contributing to the creative side which eventually progressed into the area management.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think it’s ever a smooth road for anyone in this line of business, especially for women. I know people say that all the time but that’s really what it is. There are countless periods where you feel like you are having to prove yourself even when you feel like you’ve done so much. Myself personally I felt that because I was a dominant woman I would encounter situations where guys in the industry would try to downplay my position and the work I had been putting in. I’m not one that puts much emphasis on being credited when it comes to certain things but at some point, the acknowledgment should be there and not taken by others. That’s just one of the many struggles I would say in addition to getting the short end of the stick if you’re not fully knowledgable and aware of what you’re getting into.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Currently, I manage talent. I have been mostly known for my contributions to platinum selling recording artist Trina’s career. We have worked together since 2006. It is from that I have gained most of my professional experience and grown in the music business. I currently also manage producer Audio Jones and new artist Lyriq Tye both based out of S. Florida. And I have and still connect the dots for many outside of the area of management. Management honestly consists of so much more than people really think! Some don’t really take into consideration the level of commitment and sacrifices made when you decide to take on an management of an individual. You become apart of that persons lifeline, confidant, business partner, you’re relied on to place, help build, guide careers, etc. You take a chance most times because of your strong belief, but there’s never really a guarantee that you are ever to get back what you’ve invested. That’s a real gamble! What sets me apart is that I’m really about this and my passion is stronger than most I feel. It’s never been about what I can get out of a situation. I believe have been put here to help others and that’s just what I am doing! I have put together plays for countless and many situations those that may never be spoken about. Looking back I can say that I’ve come a long way and truly blessed despite any losses I may have taken. In the end we will always be rewarded greater for being a blessing to others!
