Meet Juliana Reese of Barker’s Lane in Davie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliana Reese.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was 26 and in school to become a special education teacher when I made the decision to become a business owner. I was feeling unsure, confused and unfulfilled by my chosen career at that age. During this time, I did a good amount of soul searching, pondering my purpose and I would do most of this pondering alongside my best friend…my dog. We would frequent the dog parks and go on very long walks together. My dog and I made lovely friends and I used those long walks together to think, to search and to ultimately guide me to my now 11-year-old business.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think every business has struggles, growing pains, learning curves. Owning a business is sometimes about staying the course with extreme patience, maintaining an open mind and a keeping real hunger for your passions. I, personally, have had to learn from the ground up. I have to work every single position with little time or money left over. I feel, as a business owner, I could go on and on about the obstacles. The important thing is to take those obstacles and challenges to heart and to use them to better yourself and your business.

Barker’s Lane – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is Barker’s Lane. It’s a quaint, yet glamourous pet spa and boutique. I started this business with a “pet owner love” mentality. This mentality has consistently been very important to me. I understand the love for a pet, the connection, the need of your furry family member. It’s something that has stayed with me through my friendships made in our early dog park days. I’ve constantly strived for Barker’s Lane to NOT be your typical pet spa and to relate to the true pet owner. I spend a great amount of time on social media searching for adorable haircuts, the newest trends to incorporate into my grooming practices. We have cozy (yet glamourous) sofas that our furry clients frequently lounge on, marble surrounding our bath tubs, music playing over our surround sound…all in the hopes of making our clients feel as comfortable as possible while they are in our care. We have furry friends that come to us daily for daycare dates and we also provide overnight boarding. I’m most proud of my business, as it stands and operates, right now. It’s the best it’s ever been due to the challenges, perseverance and love.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, to me, is watching that dog leave my store with an amazing haircut, wagging tail, head held high…and a happy pet mom or dad right behind them with a huge smile. It’s an energy…a happy energy. I know in that moment I’ve succeeded at my vision and I’m exactly where I want to be.

This spa is really a rare breed. It is as kind and professional as it is beautiful. Before I moved I was there many times. Best groomer in south Florida, hands down.
