Meet Judith Rae of Judith Rae – Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judith Rae.

Judith, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a native New Yorker with Brazilian heritage. I was raised speaking Portuguese and lived in Brazil for several years. As a child, I became influenced by many of the artists in my family and the culture around me. I’m no stranger to adversity. At thirteen I became pregnant and chose to raise my daughter, Jessica while attending high school in New York City. I then graduated college while working to support my daughter and myself.

In 2003, I discovered my passion for photography in college; in particular, I discovered my passion for telling compelling stories of hope, love, emotion, culture and the human experience through photography. Since then, I have applied myself to sharpening my skills, capturing the beauty I see and growing as a business owner. When I started photography, my daughter was about ten years old.

My educational experience in photography includes a bachelor’s degree at Empire State College, studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology, a two-and-a-half-year apprenticeship at a custom black and white studio in NYC, and an internship with Magnum Photos at its New York City location.

Fast forward to today, I work with individuals and businesses (large and small) photographing their personal stories and helping them share the passion they have for the life they lead and (in some cases) the products they sell. As for my daughter, she is now a young working professional with a college degree and like me loves to travel the world.

My passion for photography is rooted in the desire to tell global stories of hope, love, emotion, culture and the human experience. I believe the challenges I faced at a very early age enable me to quickly connect with people and capture their lives with sensibility and compassion.

In many ways, my view on life comes through my photography. First, it must engage my own heart and then my hope is that it reaches the hearts of my audience.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have found that my own energy and emotions affect my work, therefore, meditation and finding joy in all aspects of life is very important for me. Also, I am at peace with my journey and always do my best to send love and light to every aspect that did not turn out the way I had hoped it would.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Judith Rae – Photography – what should we know?
What makes my business unique is my commitment and passion for photography and capturing true and organic emotion. From the very beginning, my passion for photography was from a storytelling perspective with an emphasis on love, life, relationships and culture. I believe my ability to genuinely connect with people and capture them organically enables me to tell their story in a realistic and unobtrusive way. Ultimately my clients are investing in still life memories to be enjoyed and shared for generations to come. I genuinely love what I do and I’m honored when clients invest in hiring me to capture their lives!

For me photography is like a walk with God, it has more to do with listening and feeling and then seeing and composing. I combine my love of fine art with my eye for storytelling and fashion. My passion is to tell inspiring stories through photography. I love connecting with people I meet along the way and my focus is to capture the love of life. This means I capture what moves and inspires me most in hopes that it will also inspire my audience. I have been fortunate enough to travel through North America, South America, Central America, Europe and Asia. My favorite subjects are culture, craftsmanship, fashion, beauty, food, lifestyle and weddings.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
This business and the life I lead today is a dream come true and one that (many years ago) felt quite impossible. It is with tremendous gratitude to my family, friends, mentors, colleagues and clients as their encouragement and support have helped me pursue my dreams.

From iconic photographers who inspired me to pick up a camera just because I loved their work to teachers, mentors and friends who helped me learn lighting, composition and ways to grow in business. I have been very fortunate to come across supportive people who helped me along the way.
