Meet Juan Camilo Pelaez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Camilo Pelaez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Medellin, Colombia where I grew up listening to lots of music from Latin America with my family. In my teens, I started playing the guitar, and I found that this was not only my passion but the best way I could express myself. I started out playing in several punk-rock groups in Medellin. I moved to the U.S. to continue my studies in music, and I ventured deeper into the world of songwriting and recording. For ten years now I have been the lead singer and songwriter for the band, Atajos. And I have released my own project as a solo artist where I have challenged my artistic freedom and wrote pieces that are an eclectic mix of all the musical styles I have listened to since the beginning of my musical journey.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is writing songs, recording them, and then performing them. It all starts with a song seed that can come to me in different ways – a melody, a rhythm, a phrase, an idea, or a personal experience. The best way I can express myself is through a song that combines lyrics and music. Even things that are out of my control are deep in consciousness can appear in my music. For me, the creation of music is a mysterious and revealing process.

The inspiration is life in general and its different angles and that all beings are connected by the simple act of experiencing living life. I would say the closest thing to a message in my music is spreading empathy. My intention with my artistic job is to search for what’s authentic and beautiful in hopes of generating an emotion from the listener.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I recommend going out and finding artists that have things in common with your artistic vision and slowly building a community or tribe in which everyone can help one another and get ahead. It might sound a bit cliché, but unity really is powerful.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
