Meet Joni Scalzo of Your Special Day by Joni in Boca Raton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joni Scalzo.

Joni, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Your Special Day by Joni about 12 years ago because a friend, who worked in a country club asked me to assist a bride on the day of her wedding. I had planned many events before and I thought, it would be a fun thing to do. After that day, I was hooked.

I finally found the career that combined my love of people, decor and parties all in one.

In my mind, the combination of hard work, love of people, being honest and being readily available by phone and email to brides and their families are the necessary elements to create a successful wedding planning business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the most part, it has been fairly smooth but it was not without its bumps, for sure.

This is a people business and when you deal with people, there are so many personalities to deal with… family, relationships and situations… and those can be challenging.

The key for me has been to not take everything so personally, although, to be honest, that is sometimes easier said than done.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are known for our customer service and on the job performance and have earned numerous rewards, which are based upon client satisfaction.  We are proud to have earned  Best of the Knot for 8 consecutive years, Knot Hall of Fame and Wedding Wire, Couple Choice Awards for 9 consecutive years, in addition to others.

We are vendor friendly and respect what they have to do in order for all of us to create a successful event. We and the vendors must be a team, and to have a successful outcome is always our goal. We are aware that things should not be taken for granted when planning and coordinating, and details are very important.

We learn things from every wedding and continually strive to do things better every time. We are proud to be a part of a bridal family and are honored that they chose to have us share this very important moment of their life.

What were you like growing up?
I am the youngest of three children… the spoiled sister of two older brothers.

Coming from a large Italian family, there was a lot of family around all the time, as we so many of us lived in the same neighborhood. Sunday dinner was an event every week and we all ate at a huge table in grandma and grandpa’s basement in New York.

We were raised knowing the importance of family and to not take that for granted, maybe that is why I love being part of “wedding families” today.

My bedroom, filled with beautiful furniture, was my sanctuary.  At one time, I had my parents paint my bedroom chartreuse (not sure how I even knew about that color), and at another time, it was wall papered – ceiling to floor in pink ballerinas.

I loved music, swimming, boys, dogs and to be with my friends. I liked to bake with my mother and cook with my grandmother.  English and spelling were my favorite subjects, and math was my least favorite.  I have always had animals around me and I still do…now I have two dogs, (babies), Luigi and Jenni.
