Meet Jonathan Ochart of The Postcard Agency in Downtown Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Ochart.

Jonathan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Writing is my first love, and I always knew I would make a lifelong career out of it. Little did I know, it would be in the form of running a marketing agency!

I discovered my passion for the written word in elementary school, where I wrote stories and submitted them to young author competitions. In high school, I volunteered as a reporter at the community newspaper. Pursuing journalism and public relations degrees at The University of Texas at Austin polished my writing skills, while working part-time in Nordstrom’s designer shoes department introduced me to the art of selling and consumer behavior. It wasn’t until then that I realized my knack for marketing.

Could I really entice people to buy designer shoes through blogging, cleverly-written emails and social media posts? When I found out the answer was “yes,” I decided to pursue a career in marketing after graduating from college. Marketing is challenging work, but it’s equally as rewarding. You can also let your writing and creative flags fly.

Since then, I’ve freelanced for marketing agencies while holding full-time marketing jobs. Whether blogging or planning and executing innovative social media campaigns for business-to-business or business-to-consumer clients, I kept myself busy to build my portfolio and inch closer to my goal of running my own marketing agency. Yes, the work was exhausting (and I spent way too much money on coffee like other entrepreneurs), but I always completed each day feeling accomplished and inspired.

When I moved to Miami, I was immediately enchanted by the city’s vibrant and eclectic energy. Seeing people live life to the fullest on a daily basis inspired me to grab my own life by the horns and actualize my dreams. Thus, The Postcard Agency was born and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to do what I love every day: providing clients a range of marketing services founded on thoughtful writing and creativity to engage people they truly care about across the globe.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Fortunately, other small business and marketing agency owners imparted their knowledge and experiences with me before I took the leap to launch The Postcard Agency. No matter how many how-to books or articles I read about setting up a business, hearing their stories and advice first-hand helped me tremendously.

My piece of advice: When you feel like giving up, work even harder. It’s easier said than done, but remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. That goes for you and your business! Don’t forget to take care of yourself, though. Make sure to get some exercise, interact with nature and do things you love most. I like to finish long work days off with a brisk walk around Brickell Key or catching up with a friend. Don’t let your business take over you. You’re the boss, after all. Own it and live your best life.
