Today we’d like to introduce you to John Canning.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been interested in the visual arts since being involved with the theater department while attending high school in the Boston area. However, I actually started out on the other side of the camera when I fell into a modeling and acting career after going to an audition with a friend in LA, where I was trying to break into the film industry. My friend didn’t get the part but the agent did call me back so I spent the next few years bouncing between LA and New York with modeling, acting and theater work. During my gigs, I was always more interested in what the photographers, cameramen and lighting people were doing so, I purchased my first camera, a Nikon fm2 which I still have and began photographing behind the scenes, people and action on sets which led me to doing actor’s headshots and film stills. After a few years, I ended up back in Boston, photographing model portfolios and through a friend, I got hired to be the staff photographer for a new visual arts magazine called STUFF. The work was a great learning experience. During the day, I would photograph fashion, advertising and model portfolios. In the evenings, I had free reign in the city attending every social event, gallery opening, restaurant, nightclub and concert, photographing the people and things that were happening in the city. I learned a lot during that time which still serves me well as a special events photographer.
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I have been lucky. When I first starting out work, I always fell in my lap because of my circle of friends who were all involved in the arts. When I met my wife, Naomi in New York and we decided to make a life together, we knew that New York was not the place we wanted to be so, we chose Boca Raton where she was from. It just so happened that her mother was a party planner and through her, I began my new career as a special event photographer capturing bar/Bat Mitzvahs and weddings. South Florida is a small community especially the Mitzvah community and luckily, I have been able to succeed through word of mouth of advertising.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
John Canning Fine Art Photography is located in Boca Raton though, I travel all over Florida for events. Because I like to control every aspect of the business, I am a one person company. I photograph, edit and handle every print and album, every telephone call and email from clients. That is, how I make sure that every event is going to have my look and my clients who hire me for that look know that also.
I love photographing Mitzvahs, bar, Bat and Bnai, portraits and weddings. I am at that point, where I am photographing this kind of stuff which is pretty cool.
My business is a combination of all my photographic experience: a little fashion, commercial, lifestyle fine art and candid and I try to gear that look to each client on an individual basis. I love that I am known for giving it all to my clients, my time, patience, experience and nothing but the highest quality product.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Wow the best! Beautiful weather! Beautiful backdrops! People from all over the world.
