Today we’d like to introduce you to John Beadel.
John, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My interests have always been eclectic, and I’ve always enjoyed people and places. I studied business at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland in the early 1980s and then entered the U.S. Army. I continued my education while in the military, studying Criminal Justice, and served in the Military Police (MPs) for six years while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and then in Stuttgart, Germany. In 1988, I returned to the U.S. to serve at Ft. McLellan, Alabama as a Drill Sergeant instructing new recruits for two years, and then was selected to serve an additional year as an Instructor at the Drill Sergeant Academy.
In November 1991, after more than nine dynamic years, I decided to leave the military to join my brother Rick in Miami, Florida to found Associated Printing Productions Inc. (APPi). I served as Vice President for 25 years and took the reins as a hands-on President when Rick retired in August of 2017.
I love the APPi family. We are all close, have each other’s best interests at heart, and care deeply about the company. Our team consistently hold themselves to very high standards. As a result, they are very proud of their work and the quality of our services. I couldn’t ask for a better team, and neither could our clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
The printing industry has been undergoing profound changes in the past few years. The digital era has taken many ink-on-paper publications off the market, and there are some businesses today to promote and sell their products exclusively online. I’ve seen good printing companies close their doors due to the shrinking market for printed materials, and it’s sad to see it happen.
The upside is that digital technology has also given us high-performance digital presses that produce amazing work and enable us to individually personalize brochures, catalogs and direct mailers in-line during the printing process. The advent of digital printing has been a game-changer in the industry, providing so much more flexibility, with the output quality continuing to evolve with the technology.
And there are many industries and companies who still rely on printed materials to market and sell their goods and services. The cruise line, leisure, and hospitality industries are among them, along with real estate, fashion, and healthcare. We have clients in all these industries, and others, who leverage both offset and digital printing for most of their marketing needs.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Associated Printing Productions Inc. story. Tell us more about it.
APPi is a well-established, highly-regarded commercial printing company that produces the finest quality printed materials as well as stunning artwork, signs, banners and printed packaging. We also provide warehousing, inventory control, and fulfillment services—for example, mailing catalogs for cruise lines and jewelers. And we work for some of the most demanding clients in the world.
Our meticulous work wins countless printing awards every year, from the Florida Print Awards sponsored by the Florida Graphics Association (formerly the Printing Association of Florida) to the Premier Print Awards and Benny Awards sponsored by the Printing Industries of America.
Being in the business for 28 years means we have the experience, the resources, and the commitment necessary to deliver exemplary work every single day. You won’t find that formula at your local quick-print store or at your giant chain printer.
We also offer our clients new technologies as we adopt them. A few years ago, we created a secure online store that allows clients to order their pre-printed warehoused items, or print-on-demand work, at their convenience 24/7. More recently, our wide-format equipment enables clients to print their artwork and messaging on materials that range from vinyl and wood to Lucite and glass. These materials give clients an amazing choice of looks that are limited only by the imagination.
Not surprisingly, APPi is a GRACoL 7 Master Certified printing facility, which speaks to the consistency and quality of our printed work year after year. We’re also a green printer and recycle the vast majority of our paper, ink and chemical waste.
Finally, I’m very proud to say that APPi is fully engaged in the communities we serve. We’re members of various Chambers of Commerce in South Florida, including the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber, and we actively support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami and other charitable organizations in our region.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
Great question! I’ve learned that business is not all ups or all downs. It’s more like being in the ocean and riding waves. If I had to start over again, I would be less stressed about the short-term ups and downs in favor of focusing on the longer term. Maybe it’s experience, maturity, or a combination of both, but staying focused on longer-term business goals and keeping your eye on that ball throughout the game is what’s really important.
