Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Galinsky.
Tamara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started JETSET Miami in 2010. While living in London, I gave birth to my first daughter. Unfortunately, I gained a lot of weight and was not able to lose it despite trying both running and various fitness methods. Then, I discovered a studio in London that used a pilates reformer to conduct toning and cardio classes. And it changed my body. And it changed it fast.
When I moved to Miami, I tried every traditional pilates studios and none of them created the same intensity I was looking for. So, I created JETSET – and that is how the company was born.
Pilates has not changed since it was created 100 years ago. Today’s generation wants faster results, in a fun community setting. I saw an opportunity and created the Modern Pilates method.
Has it been a smooth road?
JETSET has grown organically – and growing with your own funds is always a harder road than expanding with someone else’s money. At the end, with eight corporate locations and no debt, this approach positioned us better to now grow nationally. We grew smart, and not fast. With each new location, we learned more best practices to apply to next location.
JETSET is not a traditional pilates method so we had to create our own training program and now hold trainings of new instructors every three months.
I have also learned from my own mistakes that creating good operating agreements with strategic or operating partners from the start is the only way to grow. For example, I am now in the process of dissolving a rather challenging operating agreement with someone who I co-own some of the locations. While I am certain, the outcome will be best for JETSET and the company growth, this could have been avoided with a good operating agreement. When you talk to successful entrepreneurs – most don’t dwell on challenges. However, when you are the one going thru a challenge- it is the best education you can get in gearing up for business growth. As the business gets bigger – the challenges get bigger too.
Finally, a good lease in our business is the foundation of a good business model. Before starting JETSET, I used to be a partner at a commercial Real Estate firm and that helped me tremendously in sourcing good locations and negotiating favorable leases.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JETSET MIAMI story. Tell us more about the business.
JETSET is a Modern Pilates Studio. Being in the fitness and sexy capital of the world, allowed us to build a great brand and a loyal following that goes beyond Miami.
While we love our locals, we have been fortunate to be exposed to visitors from all over the country and the world who love taking our classes and ask us to come to their cities and countries.
I am proud that we also offer flexible employment opportunities to people from all walks of life – for example, have people who have full-time jobs, but who love JETSET and teach early morning, evening or weekend classes, or college grads who have been able to make JETSET their career.
JETSET is a business in a box: after ten years in operation, we have learned best practices we can now pass on, which means it is worthy of franchising.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
With the cost of healthcare growing, prevention is key. Staying active and healthy has become mainstream. People also want fast results and convenience – if they want their Starbucks – they can get it on almost every other corner. That is our vision for JETSET. Make it affordable and make it easily available.
