Meet Jessica Lynn Castro of Paloma Brava Co. in Downtown Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Lynn Castro.

Jessica Lynn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Miami had its challenges and with all the distractions, I got lost along the way. In my late twenties, I found myself not proud of who I was and after reflecting on my path and future, I decided to go to Miami-Dade College to earn my degree in Early Childhood Education. I am so thankful for my teaching career. It has been so rewarding to spend my days nurturing young minds and serving the children and families of our community.

Six months ago, I was craving personal growth and began reflecting on my next steps. As I was setting new goals, I realized how critical your mindset is. I thought about the things in my life that gave me comfort & nurtured my motivation. I thought about my home and how impactful it is to be surrounded by little things that bring you joy. I wanted to create a business and product that helped others curate the coziest home experiences so that they can tackle all of their dreams.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are no smooth roads in entrepreneurship, but the ride is so worth it! I cannonballed into this venture without a business background so you can just imagine the learning curve. The biggest struggle has been overcoming my own self- doubt. I’ve combated it with a growth mindset. Big girls do cry! They also acknowledge their shortcomings and commit to learning so they can continue to grow. I’ve used books, blogs, and vlogs to learn more about business concepts, I’ve networked with other small business owners, and I’ve leaned on the support of my loved ones.

Please tell us about Paloma Brava Co.
Paloma Brava Co. candles are meant to help you set your intentions, mood, & ambiance to suit what you need at that moment. Each candle in my line has a positive message that resonates with different aspects of our everyday lives.

All candles are made with love and hand-poured in my kitchen in small batches. I use high-quality soy wax flakes, melted down at just the right temperature to ensure a premium finish. I integrate richly scented fragrance oils into my soy wax and then add a crackling wood wick for a nice clean burn, with a unique touch that you don’t get with mass-produced factory-made candles in retail stores.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My Abuela, who has always insisted on being called “Bita” so that no one would know she was a grandmother lived across the street from my elementary school in Hialeah. My favorite childhood memories are the times I spent after school with her; talking and laughing while she cooked the most delicious Cuban dishes.
