Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Straub.
Jeremy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as a financial planner and worked my way up to an executive at a Fortune 500 financial company. But I always had an entrepreneurial interest because my father owned businesses. So, 3 years ago I saw an opportunity to help people make better financial decisions and avoid catastrophic ones. And the only way I could do that the way I wanted to be by building my own business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The abbreviated answer: no, it has not been a smooth road.
I struggled, living in 16 different houses over 17 years and working in all corners of the country to open new offices. For the first 12 years, I worked 14-hour days including weekends. I was so focused on work that I had no time for anyone else. I did not have serious relationships until I was in my mid 30s when I married my best friend. It was not until 15 years into my career that I finally figured out how to live a more balanced lifestyle.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Coastal Wealth, a member of the MassMutual Financial Group – what should we know?
We are financial life managers working with family businesses and providing financial wellness programs to companies. Our mission is to help clients, businesses and their employees prosper by making the right financial decisions and avoiding catastrophic ones through financial planning, asset protection, property and casualty insurance, and group benefits. Working with large corporations and business owners, we are given the opportunity to advise all of their employees, empowering them with financial stability. We are committed to making our clients—and our employees—feel like they are part of our family.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would say being authentic as possible without offending has been one of the biggest contributors to my success. People will not follow you, or buy what you’re selling, or even take interest in you if you put up a facade. People have good BS detectors. I have had no problem in my career seeking out advice and mentors to help me through tough situations. I seek input from people at all levels since I am not naive enough to think I have all the answers. I let people see I care, I let people see my faults, and I let people know what I am thinking. People then will trust you and will want to help you.
