Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Elaine.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I never thought of entrepreneurship and being self-employed to be my path for life. I grew up around educators, and I always knew as a child that I wanted to be a teacher! At least that’s what I thought. Growing up, you always hear, you can be a doctor, lawyer, police officer, teacher, and so on, but never was I taught that I could be my own boss and own a business or many businesses in my case. When I graduated high school in 2015, I had a plan like most graduates do. My initial plan was to go off to school major in education and minor in business administration, get involved on campus, and live the college American dream. Life, then took its toll and my plan quickly came to a stop and I was forced to make life work for me through other means no matter the circumstances. I always grew up with a passion for sisterhood and as I got older I found myself to always being the one to stand for the youth, with that passion I founded my first endeavor, That Girl, Inc. a nonprofit organization that focuses on the professional and personal development of female youth in my community.
Being someone who was always on the go and needed to stay busy, I took the fuel of passion and then anger because life just wasn’t going my way, of not being able to attend school and started businesses, I worked job to job. Quit some, got fired from some and then I got tired! I was determined to figure it out, and that’s what pushed me into my next endeavor, Get Crowned, a women’s boutique promoting confidence for all sizes. Starting that boutique and doing it the right way was a challenge, it took to research, sleepless nights, and a lot of sacrifices, after a successful run of Get Crowned, I thought about the many women & young ladies who wanted to do just walk at I was doing and didn’t know where to start. Birthed from That Girl, Inc. came Bizy Boss Academy, a virtual accountability partner and business aid for women in entrepreneurship from there I thought about just how much content was dominating the social and e-commerce world and the amount of money most business owners and brands spend on marketing and branding, so I thought to become a one-stop shop for all female creative hustlers which brought me to Get Branded, co. a branding agency designed with female entrepreneurs in mind. From there, my creative passion has brought me to many other opportunities and endeavors including, YouTubing, a podcast host (P.S. I love me, too!) event curator, and so much more!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had to learn that anything worth having won’t come easy! And it took me awhile! This by far has been some of the most challenging times of my life. Learning when to pivot! How to handle loses, how to recover, managing money & time! It’s a challenge. One of the hardest things for me was money and time management! One thing that most people don’t take into consideration when jumping into entrepreneurship or business in general, is the many nights you spend BROKE trying to figure out your next move! I’ve had weeks where I thought I was rich and other where I had to make $50 stress for many days. But the beauty in the struggle was learning how to create income for me and always staying ahead of the game. So, with those struggles, I now know how to manage my time which helps bring more money! Something else that I’ve learned to find solitude in that most will consider a struggle is realizing, YOU ARE NOT MISSING OUT ON ANYTHING! Social media has a funny way of making it seem like you’re not doing enough or you’re falling behind. Listen, you have time and time is just beginning for you, I learned to enjoy the struggle cause it makes for a better success story.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I help girls, teens, and women create an opportunity for themselves, whether through entrepreneurship, business, doesn’t matter if it’s personal or career development, I’m here to aid in the process every step of the way! I offer resources on every end from graphic and web design to copywriting, how to secure vendors and wholesalers for product and service-based businesses. I love teaching others how to love themselves, I help you create the platform to be yourself, turn your passion into income!
Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Knowing my boundaries! I had to learn when it was okay to step outside the box and when to “mind my business,” literally. For me, being someone who most will consider “a jack of all trades” it’s easy to unconsciously spread yourself thin. It can be dangerous to your brand and even your self-care when you try to wear too many hats! So, knowing when to say no or when to hold off on projects, or just simply knowing when to WAIT has been one of the most important aspects of my success so far.
