Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Bellows.
Jan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a veterinarian since 1975, I wanted to help my dog and cat patients needing dental care. In 1990 I became a board-certified veterinary dentist in addition to being a small animal specialist. Our practice All Pets Dental located at Hometown Animal Hospital in Weston is the only specialty dental practice for animals certified by the American Animal Association. I have authored three textbooks on dentistry, was the past president of the American Veterinary Dental College and the current president of the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry.
Together with Dr. David Bellows (our son) and Dr. Elizabeth McMorran, both dental residents, we repair dogs and cats with broken teeth, orthodontic problems (braces), cavities, and remove oral tumors. We also have treated gorillas at Disney, lions at Metro zoo and tigers at the Palm Beach Zoo.
Together with our technicians Lourdes and Joanna, we aid the Peter Emily International Wildlife Foundation’s efforts treating tigers and lions at sanctuaries around the country. I am the only veterinarian in Florida to earn the certificate of Zoo and Wildlife dentistry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Struggles along the way included pairing with human dentists to learn more about techniques and materials used in people that can successfully be applied to animals.
Challenges include convincing clients to daily wipe their pet’s teeth to control plaque.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
All animals have teeth– we are the only specialty practice serving Miami Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.
Because dogs and cats do not brush their own teeth, periodontal disease is rampant. Unfortunately, most veterinary schools do not offer education on dentistry.
Our office is also certified “fear free” committed to keep dogs and cats happy.
I am most proud of our office’s commitment to a great client and patient experience.
I am also proud of our 4.9 google rating with over 550 reviews ( more than any other veterinary practice in the country).
What were you like growing up?
I was always interested in helping animals and spend a lot of time in the local woods. I always knew I wanted to be a veterinarian. It’s been a great life.
