Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamey Kahl.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In college, I studied fine arts with a concentration in ceramics and spent uninterrupted hours exploring my artistic abilities. Upon completing my undergraduate degree, I moved to Miami and started working for a corporate company. It didn’t take long to realize that I was unhappy, unfulfilled and missing my artistic freedom. Around this time, I fell ill and was constantly sick from working long hours, neglecting my health and ignoring my need to creatively express myself.
Soon after, I was introduced to a new way of life by a close friend of mine who had been living in Colorado. This way of life included eating mindfully, meditating and using crystals for energy healing. I adopted this way of life, healed myself through meditation and food and most importantly, integrated the healing with my love of the arts. I started creating crystal jewelry and mixed media paintings using gemstones.
I began displaying my handmade wares at local art shows in May 2014 and was pleasantly surprised by responses to my art, especially my handmade jewelry. I continued to travel the state of Florida, displaying my art at craft shows, music festivals and farmers markets.
I am a strong believer that if things are meant to be a certain way, the universe will open pathways which will be effortless and free of resistance. Not that things weren’t challenging. I spent long nights working on my craft, learned how to build and maintain a website, and how to manage and save my money in a way that would help my business grow and succeed.
In January 2015, I discovered Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood. Almost instantly, I knew it was where I belonged. Within the week, I made the decision to quit my job, open a little studio at the farmer’s market and start my journey as an entrepreneur. By making the decision to become a full time artist and small business owner, I stepped into the unknown. It was frightening, exhilarating but most importantly, I was committed to my decision, without doubt and with the mindset that I was going to be successful.
At the farmer’s market, I was accepted with love and started to build a steady stream of customers that were supportive of my creative endeavors and open to receiving the same type of healing I had experienced in the years prior. In just 4 months, I was a full-time artist (and pursuing my masters in Education online from UF), which was something that I had only dreamed about.
In April, just 4 months later, an opportunity presented itself to move to Fort Lauderdale from Hollywood. A live/work space had opened up and was the ideal location for an artist like myself. By the time we built out the studio, I was ready to graduate with my masters and had the opening of Wheelhouse Art Studio just one week after my graduation from University of Florida. Talk about a whirlwind!
This April will be the 3rd year of Wheelhouse Art Studio. In the past three years, the studio has become something more than I could ever imagine; a place of healing, creativity and magic. By day, Wheelhouse is open by appointment and where you can come shop one of a kind crystals and custom jewelry. By night, it is an art studio for people to explore their creative potential.
Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest challenge is self-confidence. Sometimes, I catch myself wondering if I am adept enough to run a business or give advice to help people heal through meditation and art. Over time, I have figured out that as long as I remain authentic in my practices, then it will be received with the same authenticity.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Wheelhouse Art Studio is all about integrating the arts and healing. Something I have offered from day one is custom jewelry. You can choose a crystal or bring one of your own and I can create a piece of healing art using materials that fit your style and budget. In addition to the jewelry, I have various crystal and gemstone specimens available for purchase. We offer a variety of classes during the weekend which include; crystal wire-wrapping, mixed-media painting, tie-dye meditation, yoga classes and other classes taught by local artists.
I am proud to say that I really care about the people who come to see me. I want people to experience art and healing the way that I did. It has the ability to change your life, you just have to be open to it and know how to access the parts of yourself that maybe you didn’t know exist. My favorite is when I have people come and say “Oh, I could never do something like that!” and then, within 3 hours they have created a beautiful crystal painting. They leave the class feeling accomplished and inspired.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Fort Lauderdale is a great place to be, if you are an artist or looking to have a small business. There is a monthly art walk and reoccurring farmers markets every weekend. For an artist just starting out, I would recommend looking into local art shows like Indie Craft Bazaar at Revolution Live.
Just in the past few years, our neighborhood has gotten so many cool new businesses. We are walking distance to Invasive Species Brewery, JB & C Cafe, Glitch Bar, Red Pearl Yoga and many others! The only thing FTL could improve on, is making our area walker and biker friendly. With so many new places in walking distance, it would be nice to have sidewalks.
